Folegandros: a Greek paradise that (still) remains hidden from tourists

Last updated:

Some compare it to Santorini, but Folegandros is much more than just a shadow of the famous Greek island.

Folegandros is a hidden gem in the Greek Cyclades archipelago that impresses with its dramatic cliffs, picturesque villages and pristine beaches.

Folegandros is a smaller and quieter alternative to bustling Santorini, which is visited by around two million people every year. On the other hand, it offers all the charms of the Cyclades, just like its more famous brother. From beautiful views, clean sea, dreamy beaches and white houses. Only about 600 people live on Folegandros - mostly in the port town of Karavostasis, the capital Chora and the town of Ano Meria. By comparison, Santorini has a population of just over 15,000.

When to Folegandros?

The best time to visit Folegandros is late spring, between May and June, or early autumn, between September and October. During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm, with temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 25 °C, and the island is also less crowded than in summer. This is the ideal time to explore the natural beauty of the island and enjoy the outdoors.

What should I see on Folegandros?

To begin, visit Chora, the capital of Folegandros, a charming and picturesque hilltop village. Spend leisurely days wandering the narrow city streets decorated with bougainvillea and traditional whitewashed houses. Discover the Church of Panagia with a panoramic view of the island, considered one of the most iconic landmarks of the island.

The church itself is a charming and peaceful place, filled with peace, you can only hear the occasional "click" of cameras. When you get hungry, you can enjoy charming cafes, boutiques and traditional taverns in Chora that serve delicious Greek dishes. Spend at least part of the day on the beach. Folegandros boasts many stunning beaches and coves that are worth exploring.

Agali, a sandy beach surrounded by tavernas, offers a relaxing corner for sunbathing and a refreshing swim in the crystal clear water. Accessible by boat or scenic hike, Livadaki is a secluded beach known for its turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs. Agios Nikolaos and Ambeli are the first such beautiful beaches that offer peace and crystal clear sea water. End the day with a sunset at Kastro, the ruins of an ancient Venetian fortress. Kastro sits atop a hill overlooking Chora, offering panoramic views of the island's coastline and dramatic cliffs. When the sun sets, the golden hues cast a magical glow on the landscape, creating a truly unforgettable experience.

If you have the chance, head to the traditional village of Ano Meria in the north of the island, which offers an insight into the rural life of Folegandros. Visit the Folklore Museum and explore the traditional stone houses that showcase the island's rich cultural heritage. Take a walk through the picturesque surroundings of the village and marvel at the breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea. For a little more adventure, take a day trip to nearby Sikinos, known for its unspoilt beauty and traditional charm, offering a quieter and more remote island experience.
