The Ford Ranger finally got an electric upgrade. The plug-in hybrid delivers more power, lower emissions and incredible performance. Can the new electrified version keep the Ranger's status as a popular pickup truck?
If you are a fan of Ford Ranger, this news will surely excite you! Ford is at the event 2024 IAA Transportation in Hannover finally introduced the Ranger PHEV, a version that combines a gasoline engine with an electric drive. What does this mean for the legendary pickup truck? More power, better performance and of course – less emissions.
Electrical power makes the difference
All Ranger PHEV models, including the high-end Stormtrak variant, share the same engine – 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo gasoline engine, which we already know from Ford Focus ST. This engine is combined with a 10-speed automatic transmission. But that's not all! To this, they added a 75-kilowatt electric motor and a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 11.8 kWh. The result? 275 horsepower (203 kW) and an astonishing 690 Nm of torque. Yes, you read that right – that means more torque than any Ranger to date, even more than the mighty Ranger Raptor!
For comparison: in Europe the version Ranger Raptor offers "only" 491 Nm of torque, while the American version reaches 583 Nm. With a new one The PHEV powertrain is the Ranger set a new standard, as even the most powerful Raptor can now only dream of such torque. Of course, Ford also announced an upgrade for the American Raptor, which will raise its torque to 727 Nm, but for an additional fee.
Reach, charging and practicality
Ford Ranger PHEV it promises about 45 kilometers of range in pure electric mode, which is enough for most city driving. You can fully charge the battery in less than four hours, which is ideal for those who have the option of charging at home or at work. And that's not where Ranger's innovative spirit ends. In addition to powering the engine, the battery also enables the powering of various tools via the Pro Power Onboard system with a 2.3-kilowatt output, which will undoubtedly come in handy on construction sites or camping. If that's not enough, Ford also offers an optional 6.9 kilowatt system with even more power.
Performance, practicality and luxury
In addition to incredible strength Ford Ranger PHEV it maintains its utilitarianism. With a maximum payload of 1,000 kilograms and a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, it remains as reliable a work machine as its predecessors. And for those looking for something more, Ford offers an exclusive Stormtrak version. This model boasts premium features such as matrix LED headlights, a 360-degree camera and a ten-speaker B&O sound system.
Not only does the Stormtrak boast additional equipment, but it also stands out with its looks. It is available in the exclusive Chill Gray or Agate Black color, with a mesh mask that provides a bold and modern image. Ford has also made driving easier with the Pro Trailer Backup Assist function, which enables easy maneuvering with a trailer. In summary, the Ranger PHEV is not only loaded with power, but also with technology and comfort.
America will wait, Europe will be the first
If you're in the US and hoping to see the Ranger PHEV on the road soon, I have to disappoint you. Ford has not yet confirmed the launch of this version in the North American market. European buyers will be the first to come, as the first deliveries are planned for spring 2025, when production will start in South Africa.
Bottom line: A plug-in hybrid that breathes fresh air into pickup trucks
The Ford Ranger PHEV is undoubtedly a step forward in the semi-truck segment. The combination of gasoline engine and electric drive brings more power, better efficiency and more possibilities for practical use. The Ranger PHEV doesn't compromise its rugged character; in fact, it upgrades it with modern features and innovations.
Will the price be slightly higher due to the electrified nature? Probably, but Ford is hoping that benefits in the form of more power, improved efficiency and additional features will convince buyers that this new version is worth the investment. In a world where emissions are becoming more and more important, and where even pickup truck enthusiasts want more eco-friendly options, the Ranger PHEV seems to have what it takes to be a hit.
