The Fujifilm GFX100RF is the most unexpected refresh to the camera market this year. It combines a medium format 102 MP sensor with a retro design and a fixed 35mm f/4 lens. It is the lightest model in the GFX line, with solid aluminum controls and a weight of just 735g. With a built-in ND filter, advanced autofocus and a top-notch EVF, it promises incredible results in a compact package. But will it convince professionals and enthusiasts alike?
If you ever wanted to Leica Q3, but you are also a fan of Fujifilm's medium format, then you are in for a serious dilemma. Fujifilm GFX100RF is the first medium format camera with a built-in fixed lens, which is an almost radical departure from the typical concept of interchangeable lenses on large sensors.
He hides under the hood 102-megapixel CMOS II HS sensor, supported by X-Processor 5, which provides exceptional sharpness and dynamic range. But here's the trick: the lens is fixed 35mm f/4 (equivalent to 28mm in the full-frame world), which means Fujifilm is targeting photographers looking for the ultimate point-and-shoot experience – but on steroids.
Who will buy the GFX100RF?
Fujifilm clearly believes that the market for ultra-premium fixed lenses is big enough to justify this niche camera. While the X100VI is literally sold out everywhere and the Leica Q3 still dominates the luxury compact camera class, the GFX100RF is something else entirely.
This is a camera for purists – for those who believe that 35mm is enough for everyone and that medium format delivers unsurpassed depth of field. On the other hand, the price (which has not yet been revealed, but will probably not be low) is probably the only thing that will deter a wider range of buyers.
Technical features that stand out:
- 102 MP medium format CMOS II HS sensor – superb resolution and detail.
- Fixed 35mm f/4 lens – exclusively developed for the GFX100RF.
- Advanced AF with face and eye tracking – for precise focusing.
- Built-in 4-stop ND filter – perfect for photography and video.
- High-resolution electronic viewfinder – exceptional user experience.
- Tilting touchscreen – 3.15-inch LCD for composition flexibility.
- Compact and lightweight design – only 1.62 lbs (735 g), the lightest GFX ever.
Is the Fujifilm GFX100RF the new Leica Q3 or something else entirely?
On paper, this is a seriously ambitious project. In reality, the deciding factor will be the price – if it goes over €5,000, it will be hard to convince the wider photography community. But if you've been dreaming of a medium format without the hassle and hassle of swapping lenses, this might be the most exciting camera of the year.
The Fujifilm GFX100RF will be available at the end of April 2025.
