Fujifilm has unveiled the new X-T50 mirrorless camera at the X Summit in Sydney, which brings an innovative film simulator feature. This feature makes it easy to simulate the look of shooting on film, a first for this Japanese brand. Now anyone, even without a darkroom, can take a masterful photo.

Film in the digital age

Digital cameras have been available since the 1980s, but it wasn't until the late 1990s that home computers became the standard that they really gained popularity. Mirrorless cameras, which first appeared in 2008, are now trying to replace DSLRs. However, no matter how you look at it, it's all digital. But with nostalgia comes longing for the past. Although film represents only a small part of the market share, it has managed to attract young photographers who are fascinated by the tactile aesthetics and techniques of shooting on real film.

Cinematic simulation: a classic encounter with the future

As with most technological advances, digital cameras are more practical and convenient than film cameras. But companies like Fujifilm, which are constantly pushing the boundaries, have found a compromise for consumers. The new X-T50 is a mirrorless camera that, in addition to all the expected features for $1,399, also comes with a new film simulation button.

Like an old friend who comes to visit when you least expect it, this button brings nostalgia right into your hands. It offers a few preset modes, but also lets you choose three customizable modes from a total of 20 options, including a new “REALA ACE” mode — named after the Fujicolor Superia Reala Ace 100 color negative film, which was discontinued more than a decade ago. These modes instantly change the result of a photo without the need for additional editing.

In addition to being a film simulator, the camera aims for a retro feel with its rounded, ergonomic design that departs from previous XT series models and mimics classic film cameras with a compact design weighing less than half a kilogram, even with the battery and memory card inside. That's right, you can finally have a camera that's lighter than your cat, but just as effective at creating works of art.

Other features: technological circus

Powered by Fujifilm's fifth-generation image processor and equipped with a 40-megapixel sensor, the X-T50 boosts the resolution and autofocus performance (with an updated AI-powered AF algorithm) of its predecessor, the X-T30 II — which is otherwise a $500 / 500 euros cheaper — while gaining a 7-level in-body image stabilization system and ProRes RAW capabilities, as well as improved video performance. Its ability to change lenses is combined with a tilting LCD screen, giving you even more control over the final result.
