Computer interfaces from the 1980s inspired the design of Geely's new Icon SUV concept vehicle, which premiered at the Beijing Motor Show. The Chinese automaker isn't offering details on the powertrain concept, but it's known that Volvo's CMA platform from vehicles like the new XC40 is hiding under the sheet metal.
"The car needs to have an iconic look, and so the upright silhouette pushes a bit away from the usual crossover shape and brings the car's design back to a more elegant, i.e. 8-bit design," wrote Geely's head of design. Guy Burgoyne when presenting the concept and described its design with these words. "Surfaces and graphics have been distilled to their minimalist form, which is in line with modern approaches in the design of various gadgets."
Geely Concept Icon inspiration is sought in legendary Nintendo consoles, which is a bit of an odd design choice, but there's no mistaking the concept for it. The design is simple, but still looks distinctive SUV shape. The roof acts as a huge sheet of glass, giving it an otherwise very conceptual look, as it allows the observer a full view of the cabin.
Inside Geely Concept Icon opts for a simple design. In a visually interesting way of handling materials, the instruments appear from gray fabric, giving the screen a warm texture. Still part of the 8-bit design touches are inspired elements such as the rectangular infotainment screen and rectangular gearbox. Even the flat seats suit the overall style - they are excessively flat, so there is doubt about their comfort.
Geely has not offered any information on whether it plans to put the vehicle into production, though the company has a platform on the way CMA a lot already SUVs. In addition to the upcoming Volvo XC40, the Lynk & Co brand also has two models announced – the 01 and 02.
