General Motors reports that their hands-free driving system has more than half a million active users, and the safety record is downright impressive: 0 accidents in more than 700 million kilometers.

American automotive giant General Motors announced that their advanced driver assistance system has Super Cruise already more than 500,000 active users, which means almost twice as much as last yearThe data is based on results from the third quarter of this year and indicates the rapid growth in popularity of the feature, which allows hands-free driving on certain highways in the US and Canada.

GM estimates that by the end of the year the number of active users will exceed 600.000, and the system is supposed to create over $200 million in revenue only from subscriptions.

What does Super Cruise enable?

Super Cruise allows drivers to drive hands-free for more than 750,000 miles (or approximately 1.2 million kilometers) previously mapped roadsThe system uses a combination of adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and automatic lane changing, but still requires the driver to always monitors the road.

Since its introduction in 2017 – at the time only on the Cadillac CT6 – the feature has been rolled out to most new GM models. According to the company, its vehicles with Super Cruise have collectively driven more than 700 million kilometers, whereby not a single accident directly related to the system has been recorded.

The rise of the subscription model

Super Cruise is free for users for three years, then costs $25 per month or $250 per yearIn the third quarter of 2025, about 40 % users, who have completed the free period, decided to make the function continued with additional paymentGM did not release the exact number of actual payers.

Comparison with the competition

Super Cruise is GM's response to Ford BlueCruise and Tesla AutopilotWhile the first two systems rely on pre-mapped roads, Tesla uses real-time data from cameras. Despite the different approaches, all these systems are classified as Level 2 automation according to the SAE standard, which means that the responsibility for driving still lies with the driver.

What does the future hold?

GM has already announced that models from 2026 onwards will allow automatic switching from partial driver control to completely hands-free drivingas soon as the system detects a suitable road.

Super Cruise remains an important part of GM's plans for the future of autonomous driving, both technologically and financially. If it continues in this direction, it could become a key element in the transition to safer and more automated mobility.
