On June 24, 2025, Google launched Google AI Mode in India, the first country outside the US, an experimental search mode that provides users with in-depth, multimodal answers in the English language.
What is Google AI Mode?! Are you tired of browsing endless lists of links? Google promises that now searching can be like chatting with a friend - you type in a question and get clear, direct answers, without unnecessary clicks.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a new experimental search mode based on Google's own Gemini 2.5 model. This mode breaks down complex, multi-layered questions and presents the user with comprehensive, AI-powered answers, complete with key details and links to additional resources.
How does Google AI Mode work?
Inside Google AI Mode – Google uses a 'query fan-out' technique, where it breaks your input into multiple sub-queries, runs them across the web simultaneously, and aggregates the most relevant information. The system draws from web sources, the Knowledge Graph, and product data, then allows for follow-up questions in a conversational manner.
How to try AI Mode
AI Mode is currently available as an experiment through the Search Labs program. Users in India can sign up for Labs, where they can test everything from long-form text questions to voice or image queries in English.
Why India?
Google chose India because of its large and linguistically diverse internet population and the high popularity of voice and image search. It is in India that Google Lens usage is the highest in the world, so multimodality is key for local users.
What does the future of search hold?
Following a successful launch in the US and its first international expansion to India, Google will gradually roll out AI Mode to other countries and languages, transforming traditional search into a conversational experience where answers come faster and are more focused on the user's needs.
