Ten years ago, comparing a smartphone to a real camera would have been completely pointless. Today? It's not that easy anymore. The Google Pixel 9 Pro promises to deliver results comparable to real cameras with its advanced camera and artificial intelligence. The Fujifilm X-M5, on the other hand, insists on classic optics, a larger sensor, and full control over settings. Let's take a look - Google Pixel 9 Pro vs. Fujifilm X-M5.
Let's be real - this is a question that photographers have been asking themselves for at least five years. (Google Pixel 9 Pro vs. Fujifilm X-M5) Can a phone really replace a real camera? As a long-time user Fujifilm cameras (XT series, X100V, now X-M5) I was always convinced that it wasn't. That the right optics are the holy grail. That the sensor is what makes the difference.
But then I thought about video projects Google Pixel 9 Pro. Because I needed something that was quick, easy, and didn't require carrying a ton of gear. And after a year of shooting with it – including some serious video productions – I have to admit that I'm slowly but steadily convinces that he could be enough.
Hardware: Sensor size vs. AI power
Pixel 9 Pro has crazy numbers on paper: 50 MP main sensor, 48 MP telephoto and ultra-wide camera. His AI processing The picture is downright futuristic. The pictures are sharp, bright, HDR works almost magically. In theory – everything you need.
On the other hand Fujifilm X-M5 remains with APS-C sensor with 26 MPFewer megapixels but a larger sensor means better colors, greater dynamic range, and better depth of field. In addition, there are interchangeable lenses, which allow for serious creativity.
At a glance, you could say that Pixel wins in numbers and speed, and the X-M5 in pure image quality and flexibility.
But really? It only gets interesting when we actually look at the photos.
Image Quality: Reality vs. Computer Processing
It is daytime. Pixel 9 Pro impressive. His HDR is aggressive, the colors are strong, the contrasts brutal. The photos are Instant Instagram readyas if someone had already processed them in advance.
The X-M5, however, goes in a different direction. His painting is more natural, softer. He doesn't try anything. to fix, nothing is oversaturated. It's like looking through an actual lens, not through a software simulation of reality.
But let's face it - if you're going to post a photo to Instagram and don't want to waste time editing it, the Pixel 9 Pro will win. But if you want something more raw, authentic and technically correct, Fujifilm will show its teeth.
And then there is night photography. Pixel works wonders here. Its “Night Sight” mode solves things a regular camera would have given up on long ago. Dark scenes become bright, details are pulled out of the darkness. But… sometimes it’s too much. When I compared shots, the Pixel’s night photos often looked too artificial, as if someone had illuminated the dark parts with an invisible spotlight.
X-M5? A truer, more realistic night image, less software trickery, more real photography.
Therefore – if you want best night photo right now, take the Pixel. If you want a night photo that looks like you actually took it at night, the X-M5 is a better choice.
Video: Stabilization vs. Authentic Cinematography
Now to the reason why I started recording with Pixel 9 Pro.
Pixel has one of the best stabilizations on the market. Digital processing + optical stabilization work wonders. Whether you're walking, running or shooting handheld - the footage is extremely smooth. 8K recording and AI color processing mean you can get amazing results from your phone.
The X-M5 offers something else – “cinematic feeling”. His 6.2K “open gate” option allows for more flexible editing in post-production, F-Log profiles are professional, but they require more work.
If I'm recording something quickly, without post-production, I'll take the Pixel. If I want more thoughtful, cinematic video, I'll take the Fujifilm.
But, honestly – I'm using Pixel more and more because it's simpler.
User Experience: AI vs. Manual Control
Pixel is the definition “point and shoot” devices. You pull out your phone, press, AI does its thing. If you want speed, simplicity and reliably good picture, that's it.
The Fujifilm X-M5 is a completely different schoolThis is a device where you make every setting manuallyIf you enjoy the process of taking photos, the X-M5 will be much more satisfying.
But if you content creator, who needs to share footage quickly, Pixel 9 Pro easily beats Fujifilm.

Get the Pixel 9 Pro if:

✅ You want a quick, beautifully edited photo without any complications.

Get the Fujifilm X-M5 if:
✅ This is your photo more than just pressing a button.
✅ You want to change lenses and have more creative control.
✅ It matters to you natural color and better dynamic range.
✅ Are you serious about photography and film.
I was alone for a long time. Fujifilm purist. But The Pixel 9 Pro is convincing me more and more. I still prefer the X-M5 for photography, but Pixel is winning more and more in video recording.
