GoPro has finally decided to refresh its Max 360, one of the most popular spherical cameras on the market. After five years of waiting, we've got a new version, which - let's be honest - is not exactly a revolution, but more of an evolution.
Yes, 5.6K resolution remains. Yes, no major hardware changes. But hey, now you can finally use standard ¼”-20 tripods, which means you can say goodbye to annoying GoPro adapters. And yes, the new Enduro battery lasts longer and works at lower temperatures.
Is this enough to excite adrenaline junkies and vloggers looking for their next ultimate action camera?
Max 360: Minimal changes, maximum hype?
When GoPro launches a new product, you can expect big announcements. This time, they focused on two key innovations: better assembly and longer battery life. Which is great, but... What about resolution? What about the sensor?
5.6K was impressive in 2019. Today? Insta360 and DJI are already flirting with higher resolutions and more advanced stabilization algorithms. GoPro has clearly decided to bet on software instead of hardware, which is not necessarily a bad strategy.
The main star: new software
While there haven't been any major leaps forward in hardware, they've made a serious step forward in software. GoPro Quik App is now much smarter and allows you to:
- AI object tracking – you choose your subject and the camera makes sure it stays in focus.
- Keyframing – determine angles and views for the perfect shot.
- CameraFx – adding cinematic movements (such as rotation around an axis).
- Automatic transitions – smooth transition between different ReFrame modes.
- Frame Grab Tool – quickly save photos from video clips.
For those who prefer to edit on a computer, there is also new GoPro Reframe plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.
And the best part? GoPro Premium and Premium+ subscribers can now edit 360° footage directly from the cloudWhich means you can shoot on the hill, edit in a coffee shop, and publish before the snow melts on your skis.
Is it worth buying?
The GoPro Max 360 is selling for $349.99, which is approx 400 € with us. This is cheaper than the previous model, which is a pleasant surprise.
If you already have an older Max 360, this upgrade probably won't be enough to justify the purchase. But if you're looking for your the first spherical camera, this is still one of the most reliable, robust and software-rich cameras on the market.
But let's be honest: we expected moreIf nothing else, at least higher resolution or improved opticsGoPro is betting on software tricks this time, which is a smart move – but also a sign that there are no major developments in the hardware area.
So – is it GoPro Max 360 still the king of 360° cameras? Maybe. But the question is for how much longer.
