Are you wondering which car is the greenest? This will be evaluated in the future by the largest comparative test of "environmental greenness" Green NCAP, which is gaining in validity every year. Green NCAP is back for 2020 with a revised rating scheme and new results, which is a good indication of the direction Euro NCAP is heading. In addition to the already established and standard crash safety tests, this time the cars are evaluated on the basis of their sustainable environmental acceptability.
Green NCAP has published results for 24 car models, which have passed strict tests in the field of environmental acceptability. Electric cars stand out as the cleanest and most efficient vehicles, but there are also big differences between cars that score the greenest and those that score worse – especially those with conventional engines. Green NCAP ratings now combine precise measurements from extended laboratory tests with corresponding real-world driving tests.
However, care must be taken as the test results Green NCAP refer to models that have been selected at a given time. So, for example, in the case Renault Captur no result available for current latest generations. Another comment concerns the selection of individual versions of the models tested, which also have a 'greener' version in the model line. And thirdly, they were only tested 24 models, which does not mean that there are no models in the entire current range of models on the market that could also be more environmentally friendly.
Green NCAP is therefore an independent initiative that promotes the development of cars that are clean, energy efficient and environmentally friendly. The aim of the initiative is to improve the quality of the air we breathe, increase the use of resources for passenger transport and reduce global warming.
Two tested electric cars in this round – Hyundai KONA and Renault ZOE – achieved a score of five stars, with the highest marks for clean air, energy efficiency and greenhouse gases. She's next in line Toyota C-HR with three and a half stars. Toyota improves efficiency by using hybrid technology along with a gasoline engine, which means better performance than similarly presented Honda CR-V, which was awarded two and a half stars.
