The center of Mayan culture in Central America, Guatemala is famous for its dramatic volcanoes, black sand beaches and rainforest biodiversity. All of this intertwined with ancient Mayan culture sounds perfect for anyone looking for a vacation with just the right amount of cultural and natural attractions.

Mystical is a word that perfectly sums up the beauty of Guatemala, from the vibrant Mayan culture of Chichicastenango to the calm waters of Lake Atitlán, surrounded by mighty volcanoes. The land of eternal spring is famous for a series of natural beauties that intertwine with Mayan ruins and charming towns, where tourists are spoiled with delicious cuisine and impressive architecture of buildings. For some, Guatemala is the most diverse country in Central America. The landscape ranges from active volcanoes and mountains, to beautiful beaches and coastal towns, to large cities and small villages, lush rainforest and ancient Mayan ruins. Something for everyone!

When to Guatemala?

Although the country has earned the title of the land of eternal spring, you will not experience spring temperatures throughout the year. These also differ from the altitude at which you are located. The most pronounced is the rainy season between May and October, when showers are limited mainly to afternoons. Most tourists therefore visit the country between December and March, during the drier period of the year.

What should I see in Guatemala?

Antigua, is a city in the central highlands of Guatemala, known for its preserved Spanish Baroque architecture, as well as many ruins of colonial churches. Located just a short drive from the main airport, it is the first contact with Guatemala for many tourists. The cobbled streets and colorful houses of this charming town are surrounded by towering volcanoes, the most impressive of which is El Fuego ("the fire"). This is the right place to walk among the cute houses, buy some Mayan souvenirs and admire the colonial architecture of Central America. Antigua is also home to a number of excellent language courses that are extremely popular with tourists.

Visit Chichicastenango, where you will get the best picture of the magnificent Mayan culture. It is located in the embrace of the rainforest in the highlands, and tourists flock to it every Sunday and Thursday, as a lively market takes place in the town. The city was already the central economic center of the Quiche country before the arrival of the conquistadors, and the tradition continues to this day. Here you'll find a maze of stalls filled with local produce, carved masks and beautiful textiles, including traditional huipil blouses woven by local women, whose intricate patterns can take anywhere from a few months to a year.

You can also enjoy Mayan culture in Tikal, where you can find the ruins of a once mighty Mayan city that reached its peak in the 7th century. When you visit Guatemala, you also create in Río Dulce and Livingston, especially if you are more adventurous. The largest lake in Guatemala, Lago Izabal, is known for its geothermally heated waterfalls and marginal mango tree plantations teeming with wild animals. The lake flows into the Río Dulce, which flows directly to Lívingston, a lively center on the Caribbean coast.

How to explore Gvarmala?

A car is quite difficult to reach for the average population, so most people rely on public transport. Buses are often fully booked, but thanks to this, public transport in Guatemala is affordable and very diverse, but not necessarily efficient. It will get you to your destination, but be prepared for long days of travel, bumpy roads and some discomfort.
