In a world where most phones follow a monotonous design, HMD Fusion brings a fresh wind of modularity. With its innovative approach, it allows users to replace the back covers and thereby not only change the appearance of the phone, but also add new functionalities, such as wireless charging or better protection.

Remember the time when modular phones were considered the future? A few projects have really tried to bring this idea to life - with more or less success. But after a few years of silence, HMD Global, the Finnish smartphone brand, has stirred the waters again with the HMD Fusion, a new modular phone that promises flexibility and personalization through the use of “Smart Outfits” covers. In a world where most phones look the same, HMD Fusion brings a fun and affordable way to customize your phone to your taste and needs.

When we think of modular phones, most of us first think of projects like Google's Project Ara or Motorola's Moto Z, which tried to integrate interchangeable components into our everyday lives. But while those attempts have mostly fizzled out, HMD Global isn't giving up on its new Fusion phone. This time it's not just a swap of parts, but something that HMD calls Smart Outfits – smart back covers that you can change at will and add new functionalities to the phone.

The HMD Fusion has six special ports on the back called Smart Pins, where you can attach various back covers, such as a cover for wireless charging, a protective case with IP68 water and dust resistance, or even a cover with an attached light ring that will delight all content creators.

In addition to these interesting additions that promise unlimited customization, HMD has also taken care of open source development. With the help of theirs HMD Fusion Development Kit users can design their own covers and print them using 3D printing

This step is sure to impress all tech enthusiasts who want to make their phones truly unique.

But what about the basic specifications? Fusion is anything but modest. With a 6.56-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate, a 108MP camera and a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, the Fusion is not only a toy for tech enthusiasts, but also a very capable smartphone.

Additionally, it offers a 5,000 mAh battery with 33W fast charging and promises to be supported with software upgrades for at least two years.

The HMD Fusion is said to be available for €249, which puts it in the middle price range. Although the prices for the various smart covers are not yet known, it is already clear that HMD is betting on this phone and its accessories to appeal to both young and old users who want more control over how their phone looks and works.(

If you're one of those people who's always wanted a phone that's more than just a piece of plastic in your pocket, the HMD Fusion is your chance. It offers not only modularity, but also the creative freedom to completely customize your phone to your liking. Bringing modular phones into the future may be over for many, but HMD is proving that the dream isn't completely gone.
