How to remove a sticker from any surface – without residue, without stress, and without (too much) swearing

Sticker: a small piece of paper, a big source of frustration.

How to remove a sticker? From that new glass vase you finally get to buy to a gift that's meant to look expensive (but not covered in sale prices) - stickers are intrusive, persistent, and occasionally a little mean. What seems like an easy task quickly turns into a mini-thriller with the working title Glue Takes Revenge.

But don't worry. There's a way to remove them like a pro - without scratches, without sticky residue, and most importantly without the internal monologue that includes: "Why the hell do they even stick this on with that kind of glue?!" So - how do you remove a sticker?

Operation: how to remove the sticker

Get your tools ready. No, we're not talking about a MacGyver kit, but a few household items that you almost certainly already have on hand.

Equipment you need

1. Hair dryer
Heat is your new best friend (besides Netflix and espresso). Set the hair dryer about 2 inches from the label and heat for 30 to 60 seconds. The goal? To soften the adhesive, not burn the plastic. So, no burning the label like creme brûlée.

2. Plastic card or scraper
Don't reach for a knife—this isn't a revenge movie. Instead, use an old credit card (the perfect fate for one that's long since expired) or a gentle plastic scraper. Carefully start at the edge and gradually peel the sticker away from the surface, like you're separating your heart from the latest episode of your favorite TV show.

3. Rubbing alcohol, white vinegar, or olive oil
If the surface still resembles a sticky note, apply a little rubbing alcohol or vinegar to a soft cloth. Or if you're cleaning a more delicate surface (like varnished wood or plastic that gets scratched easily), use olive oil. Yes, the one from the kitchen—it's entirely possible that your kitchen will now smell like a Mediterranean salad.

4. Microfiber cloth or soft sponge
At the end of the operation, wipe the surface and dry with a soft cloth. It leaves no lint, does not hold grudges, and ensures that your object shines like new - without any historical traces of the adhesive past.

Special instructions for different materials - how to remove the sticker

Glass and metal
Perfect for beginners. You can afford a little more heat and stronger agents without worrying about causing damage. So if you want to practice removing labels, start with the immersing jars. Seriously – who immersing anymore?

Wood
This is where we get more zen. Wood absorbs liquids, so be quick and gentle. Apply quickly, wipe quickly. Less is more.

Plastic
Beautiful, but fickle. Test the cleaner on an inconspicuous spot first – because you never know if the vinegar will remove half the paint in addition to the sticker.

When to leave the work to the experts?

If you're dealing with something valuable—say, an antique cabinet, a piece of art, or hand-painted pottery from Tuscany—let the professionals step in. They have those magic tools and steady hands that won't do any harm. In the meantime, you can enjoy a cappuccino and admire how smart you are for delegating.

Conclusion (or: labels are no longer the boss)

Stickers are more common in our lives than we'd like - but from now on, we won't have to fear them anymore. With the right amount of heat, some household logic and a pinch of patience, we can get rid of them without mess, without damage and without emotional breakdown.
