How to travel more sustainably?

Tourism is one of those industries that greatly contributes to the pollution of our planet. Mass tourism depletes natural resources and produces a fair amount of greenhouse gas emissions, so it's high time we consider a more sustainable aspect of travel.

Already thinking about your next destination? Even before you buy a plane ticket, check how you can contribute to a more sustainable trip. From the choice of destination, to the method of transport and accommodation. However, this does not mean that you will shell out significantly more for your next trip. Far from it. Many of the tips will even save you money.

Thinking sustainably when traveling not only helps to preserve the environment, but also benefits the local population and yourself. It is precisely traveling with the planet in mind that offers the true side of discovering this planet, whether supporting local entrepreneurs, restaurants or accommodation. It helps you connect more deeply with the land and its people, which has been an essential benefit of travel since the beginning.

Choosing a destination

A number of destinations around the world can boast a more sustainable approach. At the top of the list is Sweden, which has the highest percentage of use of renewable energy sources. It also has a well-developed recycling and education system, all of which contribute to a more sustainable mindset. Costa Rica also uses a large share of renewable energy sources, and in addition, it is home to as much as 5 percent of terrestrial biodiversity, and as much as 25 percent of its surface belongs to protected natural parks.

Bhutan, Finland and Slovenia are also high on the list. Yes, you heard that right. Slovenia is one of the greenest destinations in the world, so before you travel you should think about whether you would rather go around the country and get to know the beauty of the country on the sunny side of the Alps.

Choice of transport

The most environmentally friendly are cycling and walking, but it is not always possible to overcome distances in this way. Nevertheless, the easiest option is not always the most environmentally friendly. If you use a train instead of a plane for short distances, you will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 84 percent.

Airplanes are the biggest polluter, which greatly contributes to the warming of the earth. If there is no other way, choose airlines that are aware of this problem and contribute to afforestation or the construction of windmills, and in this way try to atone for all the pollution.

Choice of installation

Choose local accommodation providers instead of hotels, local "Case" are a great idea in Cuba, smaller accommodations in Asia, and generally Airbnb. The latter allows you to directly support the local population, and with this you can also better connect with the host and learn a lot about your destination and its culture.

And finally: How to pack a travel bag more sustainably?

Don't overdo it, pack only what you really need. Also, don't forget the bottles where you can pour the water and thus avoid buying bottled water. Also take some canvas bags with you, which will come in handy when shopping for groceries or souvenirs.

Also take care of packaging for cosmetics, so that it is not necessary to buy smaller travel shampoos, but you can simply pour the one you already have at home into it.
