Icon 4×4 is known for its masterful ability to combine the past with modern technologies. This time they created a unique 1975 Jeep Cherokee restomod to honor the indigenous heritage of the Safe Flight symbols.
At Icon 4×4 have proven once again why they are pioneers in the field of vintage restorations. With their Reformers series, they go on an adventure again and again, where they introduce cutting-edge modern technologies with respect for the past. This time it's their latest project 1975 Jeep Cherokee, which combines the strong character and symbolism of ancient culture with the raw power of modern technology.
Jonathan Ward, founder of Icon 4×4, decided this time to honor the heritage of Native Americans with this project. While researching the traditional arts of the Cherokee people, he discovered the "Safe Flight" symbol, which was inspired by the abstract image of an eagle feather. This symbol was used in the past as a trademark on watercraft and blankets to protect tribal members on dangerous journeys.
Hand-painted on the sides of the vehicle, this unique graphic combines black and blood red, giving the vehicle an immense touch of character. The Safe Flight symbol is also found in the interior - in the gauges, coat hangers, door trim and many other places. The Jeep Cherokee was redesigned with that symbolism in mind, while the Icon 4×4 retains all the key features of the 1975 original, including the modern upgrades drivers expect today.
Technological sophistication
Under the hood of this iconic all-terrain beast is hiding 6.4 liter HEMI V8 engine with as much as 485 horsepower (362 kW) and 475 lb-ft (644 Nm) of torque. This power allows the modified Jeep Cherokee to easily handle even the most demanding terrains. The engine's power is transmitted through a custom GM 4L85E automatic transmission that easily handles all the challenges this V8 powerplant brings.
In order for the vehicle to become a complete off-road beast, the Icon 4×4 also included the Atlas II transfer box, which allows power to be switched between the front and rear axles, which is crucial for flawless handling of the terrain. Adjustable nitrogen-filled Fox Racing dampers allow the chassis stiffness to be adjusted according to the ride, providing exceptional handling and comfort in all conditions.
Luxury interior with heritage
The interior of the vehicle offers the perfect blend of luxury and functionality. They took the original vinyl materials and replaced them with extremely high quality leathers from two renowned suppliers - Moore & Giles and Wickett & Craig, North America's oldest tanneries. For the last one, they used vegetable-tanned leather, which is traditionally used for saddles, but this time it is used for handmade seats and door linings. Icon even went a step further by working with master leatherworker Trajan Viera, who worked with his team to carve the interior in the Sheridan style, a technique that originated in Wyoming.
In addition to the luxurious leather, the Cherokee also features German wool carpets trimmed with leather and an Alcantara headliner for an extra touch of luxury. Every component of the vehicle, from the gauges to the switches and trims, has been customized and handcrafted to maintain a unified design language.
It is built-in for ultimate comfort and functionality Vintage Air Gen IV HVAC system, which provides efficient air conditioning, along with electric windows and locks. The audio system is also customized, as it contains high-quality Focal Utopia speakers that provide crystal clear sound.
Heritage and modernization
Jonathan Ward didn't stop at the symbolism of Safe Flight. He also emphasized the importance of correctly interpreting the indigenous heritage, as he believes that the original design of the Jeep Cherokee from Detroit was superficial and inappropriately incorporated into the vehicle's design. With newly added symbols and proper respectful interpretation, Ward aims to correct these mistakes and create an authentic vehicle that truly honors the ancient heritage.
The vehicle is placed on an all-new chassis designed and built by Art Morrison, which allows for superior rigidity and stability while driving. The suspension system is also upgraded to coil-over systems, which improves driving characteristics on various terrains. Hydroboost Brembo brakes use hydraulic power to provide exceptional braking and safety.
Icon 4×4's 1975 Jeep Cherokee is more than just a restomod – it's a tribute to the past, fused with the technologies of the future. Everything from the hand-painted Safe Flight symbol to 485 horsepower, which hums from the HEMI V8 engine, is thoughtfully designed to offer a unique driving experience. The price? As with all unique restomods, this is a completely subjective matter, but this particular Jeep is by all standards a work of art that cannot be priced.
For those looking for a blend of ancient heritage and raw off-road performance, the Icon 4×4 has created a true masterpiece. The 1975 Jeep Cherokee is now ready for a new adventure, with added power, prestige and respect for history reshaped by modernization.
