"Micro houses" or "tiny living" has become an increasingly popular way of life in recent years. Many people want to escape from the city and live in harmony with nature, and small prefabricated (and often movable) houses allow them to live more freely and modestly, while having everything they need for life in a few square meters.
What is special about this way of life? The point is organization and modesty. On this surface, with good organization and creative solutions, you can get everything you need for life. In this small space there is a bathroom, kitchen, living room, bedroom and many of these houses have beautiful terraces to relax and enjoy the view. The advantage of such homes is that they are much more affordable and easier to use, easy to maintain, and you don't have to spend hours and hours arranging your living space.
IKEA Tiny Home Project
IKEA has also joined the trend of building small houses, and in collaboration with companies Vox Creative, American RV and Escape, designed its first small house with environmentally friendly features. Escape, who have been designing and building tiny houses for 25 years, have built a 17 square meter trailer that is a customized version of their Vista Boho XL model, and IKEA has furnished the interior with sustainability in mind.
The house has solar collectors that provide heating and hot water, as well as a compost toilet. The space was designed as an Ikea display home, and they were used renewable, multi-purpose and recycled materials. The interior is furnished with IKEA furniture in neutral tones, with a palette of white and black and lots of light wood.
The kitchen cabinets are made from recycled bottles, and the folding table doubles as a workspace and a dining table with built-in storage. There is also a worktop made of solid wood and veneer, a portable induction hob, a sink that saves water...
The goal was to create a space that is modern, sustainable and affordable, and to prove that we can live more sustainably in very few square meters. The house was built last March, and IKEA planned to take it on tour in the US to give people a chance to peek inside. The pandemic interrupted their plans, so now they have started with virtual tours of the house, where you can learn all about space-saving solutions, electricity, appliances, as well as tips on how to make your homes, big or small, more environmentally friendly!
