Let's face it - if we had a euro for every time we checked Instagram before bed, we could afford a new bed. IKEA has apparently realized that our phones are just as tired as we are, so they've launched something that could solve our digital insomnia: a mini bed for your smartphone - the Ikea Phone Sleep Collection. Yes, you read that right - your phone will now sleep better than you.
In the United Arab Emirates, IKEA presented Ikea Phone Sleep Collection – a mini smartphone bed set that includes everything a real bed needs: wooden slats, bedding, and even a built-in NFC chip. While your first thought might be: “Is this really necessary?”, IKEA’s answer is clear – it obviously is!
This latest product is part of their initiative Complete Sleep, which wants to convince customers to actually put their phones down before bed. To make things even more stylish IKEA, have packed it all into a game: if your phone sleeps soundly in its mini bed for seven hours every night, for seven days in a row, you'll be rewarded with a 100 AED voucher (around £20). If that's not motivation, then we don't know what is.
And how does it work? The mini bed is connected to an IKEA app that tracks how much time your phone is idle at night. So if you've been looking for excuses for why you're not getting enough sleep, now you can blame it on your phone not being a good enough bed.
As he says Carla Klumpenaar, Director of Marketing and Store Design at IKEA:
“Sleep is probably the most important design project in our lives, yet the most neglected.”
Sure, although many would agree that finding the perfect phone bed is the last thing on the list of necessary life improvements.
But this isn't the first time IKEA has taken a slightly unusual approach to sleep. Let's remember their insomnia hotline in Belgium from 2021, or promotions where you could DM in the middle of the night for a new mattress. It's clear that the Swedish giant takes sleep pretty seriously - or at least pretty seriously.
The idea for the mini bed comes from the creative minds at Memac Ogilvy. Creative Director Moemen Metwally says:
“People love toys. Why not give them one that helps them sleep better?”
In short, if you've ever worried about your phone getting cold at night, now's the time to give it its own bed. And who knows, maybe it'll help you sleep better yourself - or at least with a little more irony.
Conclusion: Your phone needs to sleep well
IKEA has proven once again that it can turn simple ideas into global viral hits. Will the mini phone bed really change our sleeping habits? It's hard to say, but if nothing else, you'll at least have more reason to laugh when you gently cover your phone with a mini blanket before bed. And maybe, just maybe, your sleep will finally be "IKEA approved". If nothing else, your phone will definitely be the sleepiest in the house, and that's the Ikea Phone Sleep Collection.
