IKEA presents a new collection that plays with the border between art and functionality

With an online event, IKEA officially presented the IKEA Art Event 2021 collection with the aim of exploring the border between art and function and what to do with a work of art that has the function of an everyday object. For this limited collection of ten items, IKEA collaborated with some of the most contemporary artists such as Daniel Arsham, Gelchop, Humans since 1982, Sabina Marcelis and Stefan Marx.

IKEA Art Event 2021

Since 2015, IKEA has collaborated with artists from around the world to create the Art Event collection. The collection is a tribute to artistic expression through various genres and genres. Thus, handwoven art rugs, crystal glass figurines and wall art such as photography, street art and illustration become part of these collections whose purpose has remained the same over the years – to democratize art and make it accessible to all.

Five artists in the sixth IKEA Art Event collection

In addition, with the sixth edition of the IKEA Art Event collection, IKEA wants to bring art into the homes of as many people as possible - this time blurring the fine line between art and design. On this journey, IKEA invited artists of various profiles from all over the world: Daniel Arsham (New York), Gelchop (Tokyo), Humans since 1982 (Stockholm), Sabine Marcelis (Rotterdam) and Stefan Marx (Berlin).

"We decided to collaborate with different artists from all over the world to show the diversity of art and design in one place," said Henrik Most, creative director of the IKEA Art Event collection. "We want to show that being an artist or being a designer does not mean that you have to be limited and work only in one field, but that you can work in different fields and that this new movement has had a great impact on today's design and art scene", he concluded.

The collection consists of 10 items for interior decoration, which question the perspective of everyday objects, while at the same time paying homage to creativity. The collection consists of Sabine Marcelis wall lamp, Daniel Arsham wall clock, desk lamp and allen key lamp designed by Gelchop, vase and light blanket by Stefan Marx and wall decorations signed Humans since 1982.

"Each product in this collection has a practical function, but at the same time it is an object of art. The traditional idea that art is high-end and design is part of mass culture simply no longer applies. The two complement each other fantastically - this is where the magic happens", says Henrik Most.

The collection will be available in April 2021

To further celebrate the democratization of art and creativity at home, especially in times like the present when many people have limited access to art due to the pandemic, the collection can be experienced and played from home with custom AR effects available via Instagram profile IKEA. Anyone interested can join #IKEAARTEVENT and create your own home galleries. The collection will be available in physical and online stores from April 2021.
