The story begins in May 1994, when Nelson Mandela has just been elected president of the Republic of South Africa. Although apartheid is over, the country remains painfully divided – both racially and economically. To unite his people, Mandela comes up with a bold plan: he plans to convince people to support the national rugby team, the Springboks, as the country will host the Rugby World Cup next year. The task is not easy, as the majority of the black population still regards rugby as a racist sport associated with white South Africans. They much prefer football themselves. Led by captain François Pienaar, the rugby team beat New Zealand against all odds in front of a rapturous crowd of 62,000 at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg. The film received 3 Golden Globe nominations and is in the running for Oscars for both leading and supporting male roles.
