Japanese art: Cutting out trees from newspapers

Japanese Art - Yuken Teruya

What came first, the tree or the newspaper? Japanese artist Yuken Teruya presents the interesting art of cutting out trees from newspapers with the exhibition The Simple Truth at New York's Josée Bienvenu Gallery, and at the exhibition we can also see his sophisticated shopping bags with a starry sky print.

Yuken Teruya he has mastered the art of paper folding and cutting, as evidenced by the nine newspapers on display in the exhibition The Simple Truth. With his help, they got a new look, because tiny trees sprouted from their core. His art includes interesting possibilities of reusing newsprint, and these are not just about cutting out vegetation, but the works also carry a strong message. In one of the newspapers, we see a rape victim covering her face with her hands. Flowers growing out of the newspaper protect her, while the white cutouts give her a saintly glow. In addition to the trees, Yuken Teruya also exhibits shopping bags in which we find trees carved from their insides. The artist emphasizes that he imitates real trees when carving, and that although his art touches on the tragedy of consumerism, his work is primarily based on alchemical beliefs and joy. With the exhibition, he wants to remind us that every plant is a work of art and that every piece of paper remains a tree in its essence.
