At McDonald's, they pay close attention to what the packaging for their products is made of. More than 90 percent are made of paper, cardboard or recycled material. With different paper bags, they also pay attention to the fact that the paper is less printed and not varnished. They also sort the waste very carefully, down to every straw and piece of paper. Now it's time for the next step...
Paper straws and wooden accessories
To your favorite drink or shake in McDonald's you will no longer get a plastic straw, but a paper one. A wooden spoon or wooden fork for salad or ice cream. The experience will be slightly different, but the pleasure of a delicious refreshment may therefore be even more authentic.
For cleaner seas and oceans
Plastic has become an unmanageable nuisance for our planet. Due to careless handling, thousands of tons of plastic waste ends up in the seas and oceans every day, where they are often fatal for marine animals, and in the end they end up back on our plates in the form of microplastics. As much as 70 % of marine waste consists of small single-use plastic items, which are now being phased out in the European Union.
Withdrawal of single-use plastic products
In 2021, a ban on the use and sale of several groups of single-use plastic products will come into force in the European Union. Say goodbye to plastic cotton sticks, plastic utensils, plates, straws and food containers made of expanded polystyrene, which are thrown away immediately after use. "V McDonald's we welcome such a decision and we believe that our guests also support it," said Denis Potočnik from Alpe-Panon doo, the owner of the McDonald's franchise in Slovenia.
In some places they wrote petitions
In some parts of the world where it is McDonald's introduced paper straws some time ago, there was quite a bit of displeasure among the guests. In Great Britain, for example, tens of thousands of users have signed a petition against paper straws, because they become soggy in drinks too quickly, leaving only a pile of paper pulp. But despite this, a mostly positive response soon prevailed everywhere. And what will be the reaction of our users?
Improved paper straws
"We expect that the change will be well received in Slovenia, as environmental awareness among our guests is at a relatively high level. Otherwise, we use very high-quality paper straws, which do not get wet as quickly as the first ones," explained Denis Potočnik. So if you ever find yourself leaving your paper straw in your drink for too long, don't worry. The benefit to the environment is infinitely more important than such a minor inconvenience.
