Downsizing engines have struck again! Mercedes-AMG has revealed the new GLC 43 and GLC 63 SE Performance, both equipped with a small 2.0-liter four-cylinder. But don't let the size fool you—these crossovers are anything but small when it comes to power. They are a remarkable testament to motor science.

Mercedes-The AMG GLC 43 and GLC 63 SE Performance both feature the same longitudinally mounted M139l engine found in the latest C63 saloon and estate, as well as the SL 43 roadster. In transverse configuration (M139) it powers AMG's spicy “45” compact cars, as well as the recently introduced base version Lotus Emir.

The crossovers share much of that engine, including the electric exhaust turbocharger also found in the base SL. Instead of the 3.0-liter V6 of its predecessor, the latest GLC 43 offers 416 hp (310 kilowatts) and 500 Nm (£369). This is an increase of 14 hp compared to the latest C43 models, while torque is the same. Compared to the old GLC 43 you get an additional 31 hp, but you lose 20 Nm (15 lb-ft). However, the new AMG Lite version has a belt-driven generator starter that serves as a mild hybrid system with a temporary boost for 14 hp (10 kW) and 150 Nm (110 lb-ft).

As for the top flagship model in the range, the GLC 63 SE Performance has an ICE engine set to massive 469 hp (350 kW), making it the most powerful four-cylinder engine ever installed in a road car. You only get it from the gas station 545 Nm (402 lb-ft) of torque, all thanks to to a “much larger” turbocharger compared to the engine found in the GLC 43. The ICE engine works in combination with a rear-mounted electric motor that delivers additional 201 hp (150 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft).

By combining the power of both engines, the range-topping GLC offers a huge power output (for a crossover of this size). 671 hp (500 kW) and 1,020 Nm (752 lb-ft), which fits the models C63. Compared to the old V8-powered GLC 63 S, you have extras 168 hp and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft). Of course, power isn't everything, as these latest AMG GLCs are quite heavy, weighing in at 1,975 kilograms (4,345 pounds) for the 43 model and as much as 2,310 kg (5,092 lbs) for the 63 SE Performance, both figures typical of European models.

In terms of performance, Mercedes claims, that the GLC 43 needs 4.8 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h before reaching an electronically limited speed of 250 km/h. The GLC 63 SE Performance reduces acceleration time to just 3.5 seconds and increases the maximum speed to 275 km/h, which is still limited by the factory. If you stick with the base AMG model, you get five drive modes, while the more expensive version offers eight. Additionally, the 63 has active roll stabilization instead of a rigid stabilizer bar.

With great power comes great responsibility, which is why the range-topping model gets 390mm front and 370mm rear brake discs instead of 370mm front and 360mm rear. AMG puts six-piston calipers on the front of the 63, while the 43 only gets four.

Both powerful SUVs largely share the design, but the 63 gets an Edition 1 version with exclusive highlights, including 21-inch forged wheels with a matte black finish. The limited edition is also available with a special interior color scheme and of course various exclusive Edition 1 lettering.
