Romanian Meze Audio, one of the few manufacturers that treats wood with the same respect as sound, has introduced the second generation of its legendary 99 Classics headphones - the Meze Audio 99 Classics Gen 2. The new model retains the signature real walnut cabinet, 40mm dynamic drivers, and self-leveling headband, but brings fresh sound, lower impedance, better ergonomics, and — finally — an included USB-C DAC/amp.
If you put them next to the original 99 Classics, you would hardly notice the difference. The metal frame, walnut-like earcups and minimalist design remain almost the same. But that's the charm — Meze understands that a classic doesn't need a makeover, but rather an upgrade in the form of the Meze Audio 99 Classics Gen 2.
The exterior is still made of real walnut, each shell hand-finished and unique. Vegan leather replaces the real one, which is not only environmentally friendly, but also more comfortable for long listening sessions. The entire set weighs a pleasant 290 grams, meaning you can wear them for hours without getting tired.

Sound: calmer, more balanced, more adult
With the second generation, the Meze Audio 99 Classics Gen 2 has toned down its signature “hi-fi glamour” sound a bit. The bass is now tighter, the mids are more open, and the highs are less harsh. The sound has become more linear, without losing the warmth that the 99 Classics were known for.
The closed-back construction maintains isolation, but the spatial image is surprisingly wide. Instrument separation is improved, the soundstage is three-dimensional — almost “holographic,” some reviewers say. Meze clearly didn’t want to create complete neutrality, but a rich, musical experience that invites you to listen, not analyze.
Technically, they're 40mm dynamic drivers with 16Ω impedance, 103dB sensitivity, and a frequency range of 15Hz to 25kHz. Translated: you can easily drive them with your phone, computer, or the included DAC.
USB-C DAC: Small addition, big impact
The biggest practical innovation of the second generation is the included USB-C DAC/amp — a small device that replaces the built-in sound card in your laptop or phone. With this, Meze is aiming for the modern listening reality: fewer analog connections, more digital.
The result? A cleaner, more powerful and more defined sound, even without expensive accessories. The package also includes high-quality cables, a hard travel case and a 6.3 mm input adapter.
Comfort and ergonomics: automatic adjustment, effortless
The self-adjusting headband is one of Meze Audio's trademarks. No more adjusting — just put them on and the headband adjusts to the shape of your head. Combined with soft, breathable foam and vegan leather, these headphones are incredibly comfortable, even after hours of listening.
The construction is modular: every part can be disassembled and replaced. This means that the 99 Classics Gen 2 are among the rare “durable” hi-fi headphones — with proper use, they can last you for decades.

Who they are for (and who they are not for)
The Meze Audio 99 Classics Gen 2 are made for those who listen to music with pleasure, not with a calculator. If you appreciate sound that is both warm and analytically precise, and you love natural materials, then these are the headphones for you.
They're great for work, travel, and home listening. Less suitable for those looking for the complete sonic sterility of studio models — the Meze sounds too alive, too "human" for that role.
Price and value
With a rough price $349 (around 330 € in Europe) They are in the mid-range hi-fi class, but offer the feel and quality you would expect from much more expensive models. Wood, steel, leather and serious acoustic engineering — a combination rarely seen these days.
Conclusion: a classic that sounds modern
The Audio 99 Classics Gen 2 headphones are not a revolution, but a mature evolution. They retain everything that made the first generation iconic, but fix what was missing: precision, balance, and modern connectivity.
If wood had a soul, it would thank Mezeus for turning it into music.
