Horten is an overly careful train conductor who is guided through life by tracks and iron work habits. Just before his retirement, his colleagues throw him a farewell party. Odd is uncomfortable with the attention they are giving him. After the party, he is locked out of his friend's apartment, and the next morning he is late for work for the first time in his life and the train leaves without him.
