Attention car lovers! Once considered 'innovative' when it comes to designing concept vehicles, Renault is making a big comeback! The new Renault 5, this long-awaited legend, presents itself in a new light - and this light is electric. It will shine as the A290_β, an announcement of a sales version coming in 2024.
Some of you may have thought, “Ah Renault? Aren't they a bit boring with their concept cars?” Well, get ready to be surprised. New Renault 5, which we affectionately call R5, returns to the scene with new life as an electric hot hatch that is anything but boring.
Renault 5 – The R5 was first introduced in 1976 and was among the first hot hatchbacks. Thus, it came to the market even before the legendary Volkswagen Golf GTI. And since the R5 is reviving its life as an electric vehicle, it seems only logical that they're reviving its sports version as well. Thus was born the A290_β, an extraordinary concept that foreshadows a sales version due in 2024.
A290_β is based on the concept Renault 5, which was launched at the beginning of 2021, but Alpina designers went a step further and emphasized its sporty nature. An interesting combination of powder white shade, partially black roof and hood and forged carbon fiber lower body with blue inserts really emphasize its sporty appearance.
Inside, despite the modest length of 4.05 meters, we find McLaren F1 inspired three-seat layout, with the driver in the middle, slightly in front of the two passengers, ensconced in their carbon fiber seats. The armature, shaped like an arrow, originates from the nose of a Formula 1 racing car. The minimalistic interior is completed by an angular steering wheel inspired by this year's LMP2 A470 and F1 A523 racing cars.
Alpine – Renault's sports brand – did not provide power details, but did mention that the A290_β benefits from a torque vectoring system and multi-link rear suspension. This will also be standard on the regular version of the Renault 5. Additionally, we're told the concept boasts a stiffer suspension, three drive modes (wet, dry, full) and four-piston Brembo brakes taken from the mid-drive A110 coupe .an121
And don't forget those huge 20-inch wheels with an unusual design and a square cutout in the center. The French flag is proudly carried by the central locking wheels wrapped in tires developed by Michelin. And yes, Michelin will also supply tires for the sales version coming next year.
Finally, a dessert for all car lovers: after the arrival of the A290_β in showrooms in 2024, there will be a GT-X Over crossover and an electric replacement for the A110, which is being developed together with Lotus.
And so, dear readers, the good old ones Renault 5 is coming back with a bang. Boring? I do not think so. Renault 5 is reborn as a true electric hit that will surely not leave anyone indifferent. Get ready for a future that is bright, electric and surprisingly sporty!
