The new Škoda Space (2027): The Czech giant that wants to be your living space on four wheels

The electric revolution that will put the Kodiaq in the glove compartment

Skoda is announcing the culmination of its electric offensive with a seven-seat SUV - possibly named - the Skoda Space, which brings more space than the average student apartment and a design that would even be approved of in films about the future.

Forget everything you thought you knew about Škoda. The days when Škoda was just a “reasonable choice” for people who buy pants with elastic are irrevocably gone. The Škoda Space (the working name for the production version of the concept) is here. Vision 7S), and to be completely honest, it looks like it was designed by people who finally discovered that the world can be more than just gray and practical. As a designer, I added realism to it in the renders you see in this post. You can see more of them at this Instagram channel, where I publish various studies.

This isn't just a car; it's massive statement of intent. Skoda wants to convert its sales to electric by the end of the 70s, and the Space is their flagship. It's big, it's bold, and it has enough vertical air intakes to strain spaghetti for an army. But beneath all that "Modern Solid" exterior, there's something that will make family dads ecstatic.

Exterior: Ruggedness that doesn't scare children

The new design language, called Modern Solid, brings a face that Škoda calls the “Tech-Deck Face”. Instead of the classic grille, we now have smooth, dark glass that hides the sensors. The entire car measures about five meters long, which means it will take up about as much space in the parking lot in front of the local store as a small ferry.

Most notable are the seven vertical slots on the front and rear bumpers. The center one is accented with orange and serves as a tow bar – because, you know, if you get stuck in the woods with your 2.5-ton electric living room, you’re going to need something to pull you out. “This is a car that says, ‘I can go on an expedition to the North Pole, but I’ll probably only go to kindergarten and back,’” Jeremy Clarkson would probably remark while searching for the button to turn off all the safety systems.

Powertrain and Performance: Mouthwatering Numbers

Under the hood, Volkswagen Group's proven MEB platform is used, but with some key upgrades. The Škoda Space will be equipped with a battery with a capacity of 89 kWh (net), which should allow a range of more than 600 km (373 miles) according to the WLTP standard.

For those of you who hate stopping at gas stations (or charging stations), we have good news. The system supports fast charging with a power of up to 200 kW. This means you'll have your battery charged before you can eat that suspicious sandwich and drink coffee at a motorway rest stop.

Although official power figures are yet to be fully confirmed, the most powerful four-wheel drive (4WD) version is expected to develop around 290 kW (390 hp / 390 PS). We can expect a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of around 6 seconds, while the top speed will likely be electronically limited to 180 km/h (112 mph) to avoid putting too much strain on the battery cells.

Interior: More than just seats

The interior of the Vision 7S concept was straight out of science fiction. The production car will lose the “suicide” doors (those that open in the opposite direction), but it will retain the spaciousness. The dashboard will be minimalist, with a large 14.6-inch rotating touchscreen. Yes, rotating! When you stop and switch to “Relax” mode, the screen turns horizontally, the pedals retract, and the seats recline so you can watch Netflix while the electrons flow into your battery.

A special feature that will blow parents away is the integrated child seat in the center console – according to Škoda, this is the safest place in the car. “Brilliant,” you’ll say. “But where do I put my coffee?” you’ll ask a second later. Don’t worry, the Czechs are masters of “Simply Clever” solutions, so expect more storage space than in an Ikea catalog.

Technical specifications at a glance: Škoda Space (2027)

  • Length: approx. 5000 mm
  • Battery: 89 kWh
  • Reach: 600+ km (373+ miles)
  • Charging power: up to 200 kW
  • Engine power: up to 290 kW (390 hp)
  • Drive: Rear or all-wheel drive (AWD)
  • Number of seats: 7

Conclusion: Is the Škoda Space the car we need?

The Škoda Space, due in 2027, is proof that the brand isn't afraid to take on the big boys like the Kia EV9 or even the Range Rover (at least in terms of dimensions). It's visually interesting, technically advanced and, most importantly, still retains that Škoda practical soul that we all secretly love. The render is the work of the author of this article, based on the Škoda Vision 7S concept, adapted for production.

While the price tag is likely to be considerably higher than what we were used to with the first Octavias – expect a starting price somewhere around €60,000 to €70,000 – you get a lot of car for your money. My take: If you need seven seats and don’t want to look like a delivery guy in a van, this is probably the best thing that will happen to your fleet. Is it ironic that Skoda is becoming the “cool” brand? Maybe. Is that a good thing? Absolutely. Too bad Space is not just a step forward; it's a giant leap into a silent, electric and surprisingly elegant future. If only those orange accessories weren't too garish in the parking lot in front of the opera.
