A camera that looks like an entry-level model, but has a professional soul. The Nikon Z5II shamelessly borrows tricks from the Z9 and Z8, packs them into a compact body – and now it challenges everything you thought you knew about "entry-level" cameras.

The Beast from the Shadows: Nikon's new mirrorless camera brings Z9-class features to an affordable package. It also shoots in 4K at 60 FPS – and it's powered by AI.

If Nikon If the Z5II had a LinkedIn profile, it would say, “I’m basically the Z8, just in a smaller package.” And given what it brings, we’d happily agree. With the second-generation Z5, Nikon has made it clear that it’s not going to sit in the shadows any longer. Canon and Sony. The new Z5II brings concrete improvements that finally make the entry-level category no longer sound like a “compromise.” We’re dealing with a full-frame BSI sensor, advanced AI-based autofocus, top-notch image stabilization, and even 4K video at a stunning 60 FPS. Yes, you read that right – this is no longer just a camera for beginners. This is a little beast for anyone who values performance without a bulky bag.

Professional power in a compact package

At the heart of the Z5II beats the heart of the pros – the EXPEED 7 processor, the same as in the Nikon Z8 and Z9. In practice, this means that the camera responds lightning-fast, and the autofocus works with such precision that it could distinguish the hairs on the chin of a running dog. Artificial intelligence can recognize people, animals, cars and other subjects and confidently follow them with advanced 3D tracking. And the new AF-A function automatically switches between single and continuous focusing, meaning you can focus on composing and the camera will take care of the rest – even if you're photographing a hyperactive child who decides to become a ninja during the shoot.

4K video at 60 FPS – finally in the “entry” class

One of the biggest upgrades to the Z5II is in the video department. The camera can record in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, putting it on par with significantly more expensive models. And not only that – the Z5II also supports Hi-Res Zoom without loss of resolution, internal recording in N-RAW format, and recording in N-Log using professional LUTs developed in collaboration with RED. In practice, this means you can shoot slow-motion footage of a walking dog with skin, fur and shadow details that look like something out of a Netflix documentary series. Now your stories get a cinematic touch – and all with a camera that fits in your bag.

When the dark turns into your playground

The Z5II is also a master in low light conditions. Thanks to its BSI sensor and powerful processor, it performs well at high ISO values, reaching up to 64,000 for stills and 51,200 for video. Even more impressive is the autofocus, which works down to an incredible -10 EV, meaning you can shoot at night, inside a café or during a concert without having to use additional lighting. The built-in 5-axis image stabilization allows for longer exposure times without a tripod, and the system is so effective that it compensates for up to 7.5 shutter speed stops. For even more precision, Nikon has also added Focus-point VR, which maintains focus even when the subject is at the edge of the frame.

Creating in your style – fast, easy and flexible

Nikon hasn’t forgotten about color wizards and those who like to create their own visual style. With the new Imaging Recipes system, you can download color presets via Nikon Imaging Cloud – either from Nikon’s collection or from popular creators – and apply them instantly with the new Picture Control button. Or, if you like to create your own, you can use NX Studio to define your own color, contrast and tone settings and transfer them to the camera as your own Custom Picture Control. In essence, the camera becomes your own personal canvas – and the colors you use are exactly how you want them.

Design for those who appreciate comfort

The user experience has also been upgraded. The electronic viewfinder is now six times brighter than the competition and three times brighter than the previous Z5, meaning you can frame even in bright sunlight without straining your eyes. The screen rotates and is touch-sensitive, and the interface automatically adjusts to portrait mode. The buttons are logically arranged, and ergonomics remain one of Nikon's strong points - even when shooting for long periods with larger lenses. Users will also appreciate features such as Pre-Release Capture, which starts recording the scene before the shutter is pressed, Video Self-timer, which allows you to delay recording, and Product Review Mode, where the camera automatically focuses on the object in front of you - a great feature for vloggers or product reviews.

A camera that doesn't ask who you are - just whether you're ready to create

To sum it all up: The Nikon Z5II is no longer just an “entry-level camera.” It’s a mature, technically advanced device that pushes the boundaries of what you’d expect from a device in this price range. Its combination of speed, reliability, excellent dark performance, and advanced video features make it one of the most exciting cameras of 2025. In a world where we’re all looking for more for our money, Nikon offers a device that doesn’t compromise. The Z5II is a camera that won’t ask you if you’re a beginner or a pro—just if you’re ready to create.
