Onvo enters with L60, promising high availability and innovative technology at an affordable price Nio, the fast-growing Chinese electric vehicle company, presents the first car of its new, more affordable Onvo brand. The L60, which was officially unveiled in Shanghai, is designed as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, with a starting price set at 12% below the price of the Tesla model. Powered by BYD batteries, the Onvo L60 offers a family-friendly alternative in the lower premium segment without sacrificing performance or technological advancement.

The Onvo L60 is 4,828mm long, 1,921mm wide and 1,624mm tall with a 2,890mm wheelbase. Its 900V architecture enables ultra-fast charging, and the car boasts one of the lowest air resistance values on the market, with an air resistance coefficient of 0.229 Cd, which contributes to an extremely low energy consumption of 12.1 kWh per 100 km. Inside, we find a 17.2-inch central infotainment screen powered by Nvidia's Orin X chip and a 13-inch head-up display, while there is no classic instrument display in front of the driver.

A variety of battery packs for everyone

The Onvo L60 offers three battery versions: a basic model with a 60 kWh battery with a range of 555 km, a longer range version with a 90 kWh battery that allows a range of up to 730 km, and an ultra-long range with a rental 150 kWh battery that provides more than 1,000 km. All achievement values are expressed according to China's CLTC test cycle, which usually provides the most optimistic numbers. The vehicle also supports Nio's battery swapping system, which means the battery can be swapped in just three minutes at more than 1,000 stations across China.

Global plans and affordability

Priced at CNY 219,900 (€28,400, $30465), the Onvo L60 will begin deliveries of cars in China as early as September, while the global launch is expected towards the end of 2024, most likely in Europe. Plans to launch the Onvo brand in the UK and US have yet to be confirmed, but the L60 would likely be priced closer to £40,000 to achieve a comparable price gap to the Chinese market.

The Onvo L60 sets new standards for family electric vehicles with the promise of high range, advanced technology and affordability, putting it in an extremely competitive position in a saturated electric vehicle market. Will the Onvo L60 really shake the cards in the EV dominance game? Only time will tell, but Nio has clearly shown its ambitions with this model.
