Porsche 911 Targa (2020): the style icon of two worlds

The first 911 Targa was presented way back in 1965 and has always been synonymous with the 911 model chosen by "gourmets". The engineers got the idea for the Targa from the endurance race Targa Florino, which took place in Sicily near Palermo. The rules required a safety arch for convertibles. From the latter, the "Targo" is immediately recognizable as a body version of the 911 even today.

Porsche complements its own a trio of sports cars. According to the models Coupé and Cabriolet the third body version of the new generation 911 is also presented with all-wheel drive for the first time and thus the designations 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S. The Targa's main feature remains its innovative, fully automatic roof system. Just like the legendary original Markets from in 1965, consists of a wide beam Targa, a movable roof section above the front seats and a typical wrap-around rear window. The roof can be conveniently opened and closed in only 19 seconds. The car thus turns into a cabriolet in just a few seconds, while the structural strength of the vehicle is preserved due to the atypical design.

The Targo is powered by a six-cylinder three-liter boxer engine with twin turbochargers:  911 Targa 4 pushes out 283 kW (385 hp) and in combination with the optional Sport Chrono package jumps from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, which is a tenth faster than in the previous generation. The Targa 4S model boasts 331 kW (450 hp), which enables the new model to reach 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds under the same conditions, four tenths faster than its predecessor. The top speed figures are nice, with the 911 Targa 4 reaching 289 km/h, while the 4S reaches a top speed of 304 km/h.

Both models are equipped with an automatic as standard eight-speed gearbox with double clutch. A manual transmission version in the Sport Chrono sports package is also possible.

The exterior of the 911 Targa are characterized by the design elements of the 992 generation. Compared to its predecessors, its body is characterized by a significantly more pronounced wheel arch at the front, and between the LED headlights, the bonnet has a more pronounced recess this time, which evokes nostalgic memories of the design of the first 911s. The rear is dominated by a wider, variably extended rear spoiler and a seamlessly integrated stylish light bar. With the exception of the front and rear, the entire exterior body is made of aluminum.

Always a little different

In 1965 represented the 911 Targa a new type of car. Porsche originally marketed it as “safety convertible top with roll bar”, but Targa established itself as a style icon. In this way, Porsche successfully combined two worlds in the unique Targa formula: the world of convertibles and the world of coupés.
