Academy Award nominee Lee Daniels' biographical drama describes the colorful political events in the United States of the twentieth century. In the foreground of the story is the fictional character of butler Cecil Gaines, who served eight presidents in the White House between 1957 and 1986.
The inspiration for the feature can be attributed to an article about to butler Eugene Allen, which is in the newspaper The Washington Post published in 2008 Will Haygood, “A Butler Well Served by This Election”.
Year 1926. Young people Cecil he escapes from the isolated south with a desire for a better life. During the difficult journey, he gains valuable experience, thanks to which he is offered the opportunity of a lifetime - the job of butler in The White House. There, he witnesses the happenings in the Oval Office, including in relation to the civil rights movement. In his home environment loving wife Gloria comfortably taking care of their sons. But devotion to the "first family" triggers disagreements in Cecil's family, alienation and disagreement with his dissenting son.
Film through the eyes of the Gaines family shows the changes in American politics and race relations: from the assassination of the John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King and activist movements that fought for freedom, the Black Panthers to war in Vietnam and the Watergate affair. Cecil experience the consequences of these events, as an employee and also as a family man. The story of the perseverance of the individual, the development of the nation and the strength of the family is realized by an exceptional cast.
