Premiere: VW ID. Buzz – 201 electric horses and vegan leather

Return of the legend!

From the outside, ID. Buzz probably doesn't look surprising. The overall shape and proportions remain very close to the 2017 concept, which was heavily inspired by Volkswagen's other concept van from 21 years ago. Certainly not as brave as the concept itself. Which is a shame in a way, as it is aimed at those who embrace electricity and value sustainability. The legend returns!

But first to the form. The short overhangs of the body - a key design element of the original VW T1 - help the cuteness and relatively compact electric vehicle (length 185.5/4,712 millimeters in standard wheelbase form) So it is not a huge vehicle - but more of a "mini van", but the simplicity of the electric drive offers enormous utility and space. Also because there is no need for a large ID engine compartment. The Buzz retains the shape of the original van. The two-tone finish covering parts of the front panel is another nod to the iconic T1. LED lights can be found everywhere, including at the rear, where the taillights are connected by a strip of light from one part to the other, a first for a VW commercial vehicle. However, we have seen this design trend in many of the group's brothers, and it is an obvious trend of the future. The last such design was offered by the Cupra Born.

Taking advantage of the MEB architecture, the interior of the electric van has five standard-length seats. In the first row of seats there are two individual seats with adjustable armrests. A side thorax airbag is built into the backrests of each front seat, and there is also a new center airbag on the driver's seat. In the event of a collision, it protects the driver and passenger from impacts. Each front seat can be adjusted up to 9.6 in (245 mm) fore and aft. Behind them is a bench seat for three people. A six-seat version with two rows of three individual seats will be added later. With the rear seats collapsed, this entry-level version of the ID. The Buzz can swallow up to 1,121 liters of cargo. However, since the car is electric, there are questions about the roof racks, which are missing in the Volkswagen concern with electric vehicles. The essence of these electric vans is their "holiday" and adventurous utility.

If you've ever driven one of Volkswagen's electric ID vehicles, you'll probably feel comfortable and familiar with the dashboard when you get behind the wheel of the ID. Buzz. A standard 10-inch digital instrument cluster provides basic vehicle information, while a second screen on the center console is used for infotainment functions. A 10-inch display is standard, but a larger 12-inch display is also available - both "look like free-floating tablets". Below the center screen – as with all other ID models – is a digital control bar.

The ID's market launch is planned for late 2022, when one 82.0 kWh (77.0 kWh net) battery option will be available to European buyers. Well, this is the same battery as the entire MEB platform, i.e. ID.4, ID.3 and other electric vehicles of the concern. Official figures for the Old Continent show power coming from a single electric motor with 201 horsepower (154 kilowatts) and 229 pound-feet (310 newton meters) of current torque – numbers that match the current VW ID.4. Unfortunately, Volkswagen is not yet ready to release the actual price figures, which will follow later. But we can conclude that they will be somewhere around 20 percent higher than similarly driven corporate vehicles. More battery versions and additional power output levels will be available from the end of next year. This means that, in all likelihood, a larger battery is also on the way.
