Potato gratin has not become popular all over the world for a reason - it is easy to prepare, and the taste is amazing!
Potato gratin is actually potatoes baked in a creamy cheese-milk sauce, sometimes topped with breadcrumbs. Usually onions are also used for this.
When preparing, do not forget to choose a cheese with a stronger taste, for example Parmesan, hard cheddar or Griere. French chefs do not hide their main trick for preparing such potatoes; instead of using already grated cheese, they grate it directly, so it melts even better at a high temperature.
Gratin potatoes in cheese sauce
Ingredients
- 4 medium-sized red potatoes
- 1 onion
- salt and pepper to taste
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 3 tablespoons of flour
- ½ teaspoon of salt
- 2 cups of milk
- 1 ½ cheese as desired
Directions
- Heat the oven to 200 degrees and grease the baking tray with butter.
- Place half of the potatoes, which we previously cut into half-centimeter thin slices, on the bottom of the dish. Place thinly sliced onions on it. Then arrange the remaining potatoes. If desired, season with salt and pepper.
- Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then stir in the flour and salt and mix with a wire whisk for one minute. Add the milk and cook while stirring until it thickens. Then grate the cheese and stir until it melts.
- Pour this cheese mixture over the potatoes and cover the dish with aluminum foil.
- Bake for about an hour.
- Note that you can add herbs to enhance the flavor if you like, but this is not necessary if you are using a quality cheese.
