Recipe: potatoes au gratin in cheese sauce

Photo: envato

Potato gratin has not become popular all over the world for a reason - it is easy to prepare, and the taste is amazing!

Potato gratin is actually potatoes baked in a creamy cheese-milk sauce, sometimes topped with breadcrumbs. Usually onions are also used for this.

When preparing, do not forget to choose a cheese with a stronger taste, for example Parmesan, hard cheddar or Griere. French chefs do not hide their main trick for preparing such potatoes; instead of using already grated cheese, they grate it directly, so it melts even better at a high temperature.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium-sized red potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • ½ teaspoon of salt
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1 ½ cheese as desired

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 200 degrees and grease the baking tray with butter.
  2. Place half of the potatoes, which we previously cut into half-centimeter thin slices, on the bottom of the dish. Place thinly sliced onions on it. Then arrange the remaining potatoes. If desired, season with salt and pepper.
  3. Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then stir in the flour and salt and mix with a wire whisk for one minute. Add the milk and cook while stirring until it thickens. Then grate the cheese and stir until it melts.
  4. Pour this cheese mixture over the potatoes and cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  5. Bake for about an hour.
  6. Note that you can add herbs to enhance the flavor if you like, but this is not necessary if you are using a quality cheese.
