Renault impresses us again! With the Embléme concept presented at the 2024 Paris Motor Show (mid-October), the manufacturer is stepping firmly into the future. This futuristic model not only brings a stunning design, but also revolutionary hydrogen-electric hybrid propulsion technology. Is it a successor to the once famous Laguna model?

When French elegance meets technological advancement, we get the Renault Emblem concept. This BMW 3-sized car not only demonstrates Renault's vision of maintaining its presence in the D-segment, but also signals the future of powertrains. Embléme combines electric propulsion with hydrogen technologies and promises to meet both environmental expectations and customer demands for greater range and lower weight.

Technological breakthrough: Hybrid drive with a hint of hydrogen

Renault's concept uses an extremely advanced combination of a 40kWh battery and a rear-mounted 214 horsepower (160 kW) electric motor, which is powered mostly by electricity. But the real innovation lies in the use of a small liquid hydrogen fuel cell. This acts as a range extender, adding around 350 kilometers (217 miles) to the already impressive electric range. Together, the Renault Embléme should be able to last several hundreds of kilometers on a single charge, which effectively solves the fear of the limited range typical of electric vehicles.

What's more, the hydrogen fuel cell emits only water, which means that the Embléme not only reduces CO2 emissions, but at the same time maintains a completely emission-free drive. Renault has set an ambitious target of keeping the total weight of the vehicle below 1,750 kg, which is impressive for a vehicle of this size and type of drivetrain.

Environmentally friendly production

Renault's goal is not only to reduce emissions during use, but also throughout the entire life cycle of the vehicle. Embléme boasts as much as 90 % lower CO2 emissions compared to conventional electric vehicles. This breakthrough is achieved through the extensive use of recycled and recyclable materials, which allows for an even further reduction of the environmental footprint. Who would have thought that the future of cars would be so green?

A design that takes your breath away

When you first look at the Renault Emblem, you will immediately notice that it is a completely new design direction. Although the Renault 4 and 5 models pay homage to the past with retro elements, the Embléme faces the future. The sharply sculpted lines and bold appearance are reminiscent of modern automotive sculptures that seem ready to rule the roads.

Aerodynamics play a key role in optimizing vehicle performance. Renault turned to its Alpine F1 team to help develop this aspect. Together, they developed several aerodynamic tricks, including adaptive front and rear elements that reduce air resistance and further increase range.

The future of the D-segment

Although Renault has yet to reveal whether the Emblem will go into series production, it has confirmed that it will maintain its presence in the larger model segment. This is particularly interesting as the European market is gradually moving away from traditional sedans and hatchbacks towards SUVs. With the Embléme concept, Renault makes it clear that it wants to rekindle interest in the D-segment, while also exploring new technologies and body designs that could restore the former success of models like the Laguna.

Conclusion: Are we in for a Laguna successor?

Renault Emblem is more than just a concept. It is a clear vision of the future of cars, where advanced technology and sustainable mobility come together. While it's not confirmed if the Embléme will ever hit the roads, it's clear that Renault still believes in the future of larger sedans, while keeping its environmental commitments in mind.

The emblem both excites us and leaves open questions - will Renault usher in a new era with this model, similar to when Laguna reigned on European roads? If the right model is priced competitively and Renault offers enough innovation, that future may be much closer than we think.
