Rio 2016: all different, all equal

POI Rio 2016

Every day, the 2016 Summer Olympics serve up new top achievements, new milestones, new moments of indescribable joy and sadness, and last but not least, new memes. But Rio 2016 will go down in history with something else. It represents a milestone for athletes of the Muslim faith. Some time ago, due to religious and cultural reasons (not least the weather conditions, remember, it was quite cold in London), the International Volleyball Federation adjusted the rules regarding the equipment of the competitors, which opened the door wide open for the Egyptians Doaaji El Ghobashy and Nadi Meawad, who made sure that the "unusual" scenes from the beach volleyball match went to the world. But this is not the only "non-sporting" historical moment from Rio.

Although many of us doubted it, POI Rio 2016, at all the first Olympic Games in South America, herald a new era blurred borders, both sporting and geopolitical. The Olympic Games have now become a truly universal event that unites all sides of the world. Although some media continue to report that Rio 2016 also underlines all the differences between "us" (the West) and "them" (the third world), that it is even a clash of cultures, but the scenes from the scenes say otherwise.

Rio 2016 is approaching.
Rio 2016 is getting closer.

Not yet a twenty-year-old Egyptian beach volleyball player Doaa El Ghobashy and Nada Meawad they "shocked" the world public when they appeared at the match with the Germans in hijab, with which they took care of a bit less bare skin, which is an integral and for many (unfortunately) also the most attractive part of this sport. But Egyptian women are not the only ones to appear in the hijab at the Rio Olympics. Also a fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad became and has become at all the first American woman in this sport, who appeared at the competition in such a task. With it, he wants to remove prejudices and change the view of Muslim athletes, as well as change the rhetoric about this religion or culture.

They also took care of another historic moment Korean gymnasts, who took a historic selfie during the qualifications of the gymnastics program and instantly became a symbol of unity. The athletes come from different countries on the Korean peninsula. A South Korean Lee Eun Ju, a 17-year-old debutant at the OI, and her experienced 27-year-old colleague and already an Olympic champion Hong Un Jong from North Korea proved that sport unites and that political spreads between the two countries (technically they are even at war) they mean absolutely nothing. And if in their countries they may be disgusted by their action, they instantly won a lot of sympathy around the world.
