After more than four decades of absence, Scout is introducing two new electric off-road vehicles – the Scout Traveler SUV and the Scout Terra Pickup. Built on a completely new platform, they promise incredible performance, including a range of up to 800 kilometers and acceleration to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. Production begins in 2027.
Remember Scout? Those robust SUVs that are between the years 1961 and 1980 dominated on all terrains, from muddy forest paths to the snowy mountains? Well, after a 44-year hiatus, the Scout brand is back – and with full force! This time in electric form, which with the new models, Scout Traveler SUV and Scout Terra Pickup, will conquer not only the wilderness, but also the hearts of lovers of classic off-road vehicles and modern technology.
Scout's comeback is like that nostalgic as well as futuristic, as it combines classic design with modern electric performance, leaving us looking forward to getting behind the wheel of these electric legends in 2027. But why wait until then? Let's see what Scout already promises us today.
Unparalleled electrical power and performance
Both new Scout models, Traveler and Terra, are based on an all-new, specially developed body-on-frame chassis, which promises robustness and durability. But that's not all! Scout has made the off-road adventure even more extreme. With the ability to ford water nearly 90 cm (35 inches) deep and tires up to 89 cm (35 inches) in size, these vehicles are ready for any challenge. And let's not forget, there will also be mechanical front and rear differential locks and a detachable stabilizer bar.
The electric drive provides almost 1,356 Nm of torque (1,000 lb-ft), allowing both models to reach 100 km/h (60 mph) in all 3.5 seconds. Yes, you read that right! And that's in vehicles that weigh considerably more than your average electric car. Scout hasn't revealed all the technical specifications yet, but we expect both vehicles to have at least 560 kilometers (350 miles) of range on a single charge. But if that's not enough, you can choose an optional extended version with a gasoline generator that will extend the range to more than 800 kilometers (500 miles).
SUV Traveler and pickup Terra: two players for different tastes
Scout Traveler and Scout Terra offer something for everyone. If you're more of an SUV type, the Traveler is the right choice for you. Like any real SUV, it will have room for up to an 89cm (35in) spare tire, which will be integrated at the rear, so you won't have to worry if you run into trouble off-road. The Traveler will easily tow trailers weighing up to 3,175 kg (7,000 lbs), satisfying all camping and outdoor adventure enthusiasts.
For those of you who prefer to choose between pickups, the Terra Pickup is a beast. It will be able to tow trailers weighing more than 4,500 kg (10,000 lbs), which will be enough for even the heaviest loads. Its loading area will be 1.68 meters (5.5 feet) long, which means you will be able to load almost everything you need for your adventures. And if you need electricity on the go, the Terra will surprise you with two 120-volt and one 240-volt sockets in the rear - ideal for those who like to camp in style.
Charging and technological innovation
Both Scout models will support NACS (North American Charging Standard) and offer up to 350 kW of fast charging power. Thank you 800-volt architectures these off-road vehicles will be ready for the new times and will also allow two-way charging, which means that you will be able to use your vehicle as a mobile charging station. Perfect for camping, right?
As for the interior, the Scout pays homage to the past with simple and functional controls that include mechanical grips and analog climate control buttons located below the large central display. They took inspiration from the original Scout II, giving the interior that real, rugged feel. If you're more nostalgic, you can even opt for a front bench instead of the classic center console in the Terra Pickup - a real treat for fans of classic SUVs.
Price and availability
If you're already excited about Scout's new models, we have good news. You can reserve yours today with a deposit of just $100! The base price for the Traveler SUV will be around $50,000, while the Terra Pickup will be slightly more expensive, with a price tag of $51,500. That means the final price for both models, depending on equipment, will be just under $60,000 – quite a bargain for this kind of performance and technology.
Of course, you'll have to wait a little longer for your vehicles, as Scout doesn't plan to start production until 2027. But with all the promises the Scout is making, it looks like the wait will be totally worth it.
Conclusion: A big upcoming player with eyes on the future
With its return, the Scout revived nostalgia while simultaneously opening the door to the electric future of off-road vehicles. Traveler and Terra are sure to make Scout synonymous with robustness, performance and reliability once again. Their combination of outstanding performance, innovative features and unrivaled electric power promises to make the Scout king of the off-road once again.
Although we'll have to wait a few more years for these vehicles, it's clear that they'll shake up the world of off-road vehicles when they hit the market. The question is no longer whether an electric future is possible, but only who will reign in this new electric era. And Scout seems like the perfect candidate for this prestigious role.
