The nature reserve Škocjanski zatok is the last witness of the island's past of Koper and a Slovenian natural pearl, attractive to all those who want to get to know and experience nature. It will delight both adults and children.
Natural reserve Škocjanski zatok, our largest semi-saline wetland, is an oasis of peace on the doorstep of Koper, and visitors have here recreation opportunities and relaxation in nature and observations of animal and plant species. It is equipped with a special infrastructure for observing nature, which is also adapted for people with special needs.
The Škocjan Bay is a paradise for many animal and plant species due to its diverse mix of semi-salty and freshwater habitats. The area is particularly important because of the great variety of birds. In the last decade, ornithologists have counted as many as 258 different species. They nest here in large numbers, hibernate and stop during migration. In addition to birds, the reserve is also rich in butterflies, dragonflies, frogs, and on wet meadows, the vegetation is regulated by grazing old Istrian or Podolian cattle and chamber horses.
You knew he was Koper was once an island? The Romans founded the city of Aegis on a naturally protected islet overgrown with maquis. It is believed that simple salt pans were arranged in the marshes and shallows around the bay already in the old age. During the turbulent times from Late Antiquity to the Migration of Nations, the city was called Capraria – Goat Island or Caprae, from where the Slovenian name also originates Dill.
