The center of every medieval town is its castle - it is no different in Škofja Loka. We can see the castle of Loki from afar when we are just approaching Škofja Loki. However, today it is far from its medieval image.
The appearance itself is, of course, the same, but children no longer fight on its banks, but children sled; inside, it is not the counts who are walking around, but the visitors who have come to see the museum in the castle premises.
VIVID BEHIND THE WALLS OF THE HOUSE
Although the city streets seem empty at first glance, this does not mean that there is no life in the city. Apparently, the secret is only that on cold days the action moves inside the buildings. Namely, when we enter cafes and restaurants, there are quite a few visitors who have come to warm themselves with a hot drink, to sweeten themselves with a cake or to fill their stomachs with a local specialty, preferably according to an old medieval recipe. Otherwise, the slightly reserved visitors to the bars give the impression that, due to the small size of the town, everyone knows each other. They immediately realize that someone is a foreigner, but they maintain their friendliness, so they are happy to advise where to go and what to see.
BISHOP ARCH EVENING
Even in the evening, Škofja Loka offers quite a few possibilities for a pleasant leisure time. Most of the action, almost every day, takes place in the Pri Rdeči ostrigi club, where concerts and themed parties are organized on weekends, and you can also have fun in one of the bars. For cultural events, we can go to the theater Loški oder and to one of the galleries (Ivan Grohar or France Mihelič).
EXCURSIONS IN THE SURROUNDINGS
We don't need a lot of time to see and get to know Škofja Loka, because the city really isn't big. Stara Loka is also close by, so you can drive to it after visiting the city's sights. On the other side of town, we come to Puštal, where they also have a castle, and its landmark and specialty is Nacet's house, where we can see the black kitchen and even try the delicacies from it! We need a car for these two tours - the places are not very far from each other, but you just need to have a means of transport. When we are tempted to take other paths, not just flat asphalt and granite blocks, Škofja Loka offers many possibilities. A shorter and pleasant walk leads to the castle, which can be reached by two routes - preferably one up, the other down. For those who want longer hikes, Škofja Loka is an excellent starting point for a trip to Osolnik or Lubnik, a descent into Marija brezno, skiing on Stari vrh, and there are also many cycling routes in the surrounding area.
HOW TO GET THERE?
By car, follow the old road to Kranj, leave it at the turnoff for Škofja Loka; the drive from Ljubljana takes about half an hour. By train - they run every day very often, and the price is very reasonable, the journey takes 20 to 26 minutes.
