In the spirit of the 22nd Slovenian Film Awards in Vesna, we looked at the best Slovenian films of all time.

Vesna (1953)


The first real comedy created in Slovenia tells about the life of high school students. Three classmates who have to take their matriculation exams agree that Samo, one of them, must win the daughter of Professor Cosinus and thus provide the math assignments.

Dancing in the Rain (1961)


Painter Peter would like to meet the ideal woman. Theater actress Maruša, with whom Peter has been in a steady relationship for seven years, would like to live with him and share everything with him. One night, Peter leaves Maruša, and even Maruša herself thinks that it is better that way. But in the end, both of them realize that they have lost something very important.

Goodbye to the Next War (1980)


During a holiday in Spain, two former mortal enemies meet: Slovene partisan Berk and German soldier Bitter, who fought in the ranks of the occupiers in Yugoslavia. In the middle of a friendly, tourist-free Spain, memories of the wartime, in which they were adversaries, come to life again.

Abortion of the Jellyfish (1980)


The main characters are teachers Kristina and Ljiljana, lost in the middle of the Vojvodina landscape. The first is Slovenian, the second is Serbian, and both dream of a new life in a big city. From beginning to end, the film is enriched with literary and visual elements of Dadaism and Surrealism.

Outsiders (1996)


Sead is a young man from a mixed family - his father is from Bosnia and is a JLA ensign, his mother is Slovenian, a housewife. The film begins with his arrival in Slovenia, where he continues his education at the Ljubljana high school. His problems begin when he falls under the influence of the punk movement and becomes a member of a band.

Charismatic theater director and author Herman is preparing a new play, which is said to be an excess of his previous successes. During the rehearsals, many secrets and manipulations begin to be revealed, with which Herman wants to make fun of the relationships of the actors in his play.

Oton observes the development of his hometown from 1934, when King Alexander was killed in France, through the Italian and then the German occupation, to the arrival of communism. He promises his friend Marjana that they will love each other forever. Otto's wishes do not come true, the Italian occupier invades Ljubljana, and Marjana is captivated by a new love.

Rooster's Breakfast (2007)


Djuro is employed as an apprentice by master Gajaš. The quiet life of the young apprentice is disturbed by the arrival of the dark-haired beauty Bronja, otherwise married to Lepec, a local bastard and pimp. Bronja and Djuro embark on a risky love affair, while Gajaš also harbors romantic fantasies and dreams of Severina.

The relationship between the students and the new German teacher is extremely strained. When one of the students commits suicide, her classmates accuse the teacher of being responsible for her death. The realization that things are not so black and white comes too late...

Idyll (2015)


Amateur photo model Zina goes with her team on a fashion photo shoot in pristine nature. On the idyllic meadow they have chosen for a photo shoot, they are ruthlessly attacked by the alleged owners of the meadow, Francl and Vintlr, and dragged into a dark cellar. The fight for life begins.

The movie Houston, we have a problem! is an intriguing feature-documentary film that explores the myth of America's alleged multi-billion dollar purchase of the secret Yugoslav space program in the early 1960s.

Ivan (2017)


Immediately after young Mara gives birth to Ivan, her worst nightmare begins. Ivan's father Rok, a married businessman whom Mara loves obsessively, disappears. When Mara finds out that Rok is accused of economic crime, she is brutally beaten by his wife's colleagues. Thus, Mara finds herself faced with an impossible choice between her love and her child.

Slovenian Film Festival 2019: winners

On September 22, the awards of the 22nd Slovenian Film Festival were presented in the main hall of the Portorož Auditorium. The absolute winner of the evening was a stunning cinematic creation Tales from the chestnut woods, which received a constant for best feature film, and also forever for best direction, for best film as chosen by the audience, for best male lead, for best photo, for original soundtrack, for the best montage, for the best scenography, for the best costume design, for the best mask and for the best sound. The film also received IRIDIUM cash prize for post-production services.

She has always earned the lead female role Liza Marijina, namely for the role of the rebellious nurse in Half Sister. This time, the delicate story was celebrated as the best screenplay Igor and Rosa from the hands of Katja Colja and Angel Carbon.

During the Slovene film evening, the prize of the educational program Sharpening the vision was also awarded for the best student film in the competition program, which went to Catfish Sandra Jovanovska. The film received the award of the Art Cinema Network of Slovenia God exists, her name is Petrunia, the Kosobrin Award for valuable film collaborators, which is awarded by the Society of Slovenian Directors Matija Kozamernik Jojo, the film's director.
