Sonos Move 2: The speaker you'll want to take everywhere (but probably won't)

Better, louder, more expensive. And as serious as mortal sin.

If you've ever owned a Sonos speaker, you know: once you're in their ecosystem, there's no going back. Sonos is like that cool guy in the crowd who never tries too hard, but still always comes across as superior. And the Sonos Move 2 continues that tradition – it's a speaker that's both smart enough for the living room and rugged enough for the patio, balcony, weekend getaway, or a spontaneous road trip. But... is it really portable? Well, yes. If portable means carrying something around with a fair amount of willpower and dedication.

Sonos Move 2 is a major upgrade over the first generation – first and foremost because of the stereo sound. Yes, stereo. Which means you can now actually hear music as it was recorded – no more of that mid-range mono sound that was a bit of a letdown with the first Move. The bass is deep, the vocals are clear, and when you turn up the volume, Bohemian Rhapsody, you actually hear those delicate details that are lost with inferior speakers.

Sonos is known for adapting sound to the room, and the Sonos Move 2 is no exception – with automatic Trueplay tuning It senses its surroundings and adjusts the sound to always sound optimal. So whether you place it on a wooden table, a concrete patio, or near a pool, it will adapt and play as if it were meant to be there.

Battery: Marathon, not sprint

The biggest upgrade? The battery. If it was First Move a kind of 10-hour sprinter, the Move 2 is a true endurance runner – Sonos promises up to 24 hours of playback, meaning you'll have sound all day and then some. In real-world terms, that means you don't have to worry too much about when to charge it - unless you're one of those people who always forgets to charge everything from your phone to your electric car.

But when it comes time to charge, Sonos offers its own minimalist solution – simply place it on the included charging ring and it’s ready to go. No cables, no searching for outlets. Just place it on and go. But if you’re on the go and that charging ring isn’t quite at hand, you can also charge the Move 2 via USB-C – and if you want to be a real multi-tasker, you can even use it as a power bank for your phone. Yes, Sonos is now solving your iPhone battery woes too.

Is it really portable? Well, yes… the Sonos Move 2

The Sonos Move 2 weighs just over 3 kilograms. Which means if you think you’re going to casually throw it in your backpack and go hiking, think again. Sure, it has a built-in handle that makes it easy to carry, but let’s face it – this is not the Sonos Roam that you can easily throw in your bag. The Move 2 is more “I’ll take it to the terrace, in the garden or on the boat” portable than “I’ll take it on a hike in Triglav National Park”.

So if you're looking for something ultra-lightweight that you can carry around like a water bottle, then the Move 2 isn't for you. But if you want a portable speaker that's as powerful as a stationary home system, then this is the best choice.

Connectivity and smart features

Sonos Move 2 It supports all modern connectivity methods – Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and AirPlay 2. This means you can easily integrate it into your Sonos ecosystem or use it as a standalone Bluetooth speaker.

It is additionally equipped with voice assistants – Amazon Alexa and Sonos Voice Control. Unfortunately, Google Assistant is not an option here (for reasons probably known only to Google and Sonos), but if you don't feel like using voice commands, you can simply turn them off.

Additionally, the Move 2 now has a USB-C port that allows you to connect a 3.5mm adapter – meaning you can finally connect a turntable, DJ console, or some old MP3 player if you're feeling nostalgic.

Sonos Move 2 vs. other Sonos – where does it fit in?

If you're on a tight budget and only want one Sonos speaker, the Move 2 is probably the most versatile choice. It's not as space-intensive as the Era 300, nor as compact as the Roam, but it has the best of both worlds: premium sound and portability.

But if no If you plan on moving, then it might make more sense to get two Sonos Era 100s for the same money and create a true stereo experience.

Is it worth 499 euros?

Excellent stereo sound
Exceptional battery life (24 hours is more than enough)
Durable construction and weather resistance
Smart features, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB-C

Not as portable as you'd like to believe
Still quite expensive – Sonos after all
Google Assistant is not supported.

If you want the ultimate portable speaker that doesn't compromise on sound, the Move 2 is a fantastic choice. But if you expect to easily hop around with it, you might be surprised at how quickly it becomes part of your (statistical) home system. Buy through this link!

In other words – if you buy it, you will find reasons to take it with you. Because if you are spent half a thousand for a portable speaker, you'll probably want it to follow you everywhere. If nothing else, at least to your neighbor's garden.
