Volkswagen's electric revival – Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI
The end of confusion, time for clarity
Volkswagen has been wandering in the labyrinth of its electric brands for a long time. ID.3, ID.4, ID. Buzz – all well and good, but where is the emotional connection that customers have with names like Golf or Polo? CEO Thomas Schäfer is clear: “Names like Polo are woven into the brand's DNA. They represent quality, design and reliability.” And that's why Volkswagen is returning to its roots, but with an electric twist. The ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI, which will hit the roads in 2026, are proof that tradition and innovation can go hand in hand.
Specifications: Power and soul in electricity – Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI
The ID. Polo GTI is based on the ID. GTI concept, which has already impressed during initial testing. Although Volkswagen has not yet revealed all the details, we know that the ID. Polo GTI will be powered by an electric motor with an output of around 165 kW (221 hp) and torque approximately 300 Nm (221 lb-ft). Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) will be in keeping with GTI tradition – we expect a time under 7 seconds, while the top speed will be electronically limited to around 180 km/h (112 mph). Battery? We are talking about capacity 38 kWh, which should provide a range of around 400 km (248 miles) according to the WLTP standard. The charging speed will support up to 100 kW at fast chargers, meaning that 10 to 80 % will be charged in approximately 25 minutes.
The basic ID. Polo will be a bit more sedate, with power around 110 kW (148 hp) and the same battery, but still lively enough for urban adventures. Both models will be built on the MEB-Lite platform, adapted for smaller electric cars, which promises excellent handling and a low center of gravity.
Inside: Physical keys and German precision
Volkswagen has listened to critics. After years of complaints about too much screen-oriented interiors, the ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI are making a comeback physical keys! Yes, you heard that right – no more sliding screens to adjust the climate. The interior will be upholstered in softer materials, in response to pressure from Chinese competitors who offer surprisingly refined interiors in lower price ranges. The large central display will still be present, but now in harmony with tactile controls. “Finally a car you can drive without needing a PhD in touch-screenology,” you could say.
Design: Distinctive yet fresh
The ID. Polo retains the recognizable lines of the classic Polo, but with an electric twist. The front grille is closed, and the LED headlights are sharp and modern. The GTI version adds more aggressive bumpers, red accents and 18-inch wheels. All in all, it works as Polo, who just jumped out of the gym and dressed in a futuristic suitCompact dimensions – length approx. 4 meters – promise agility in the city, while the spacious cabin and trunk (around 300 liters) ensure practicality.
A historical bridge to the future
The Polo has been synonymous with reliability and affordability since 1975, while the GTI stands for sporty soul in a small package. With this step, Volkswagen is not only reviving an iconic name, but also building a bridge between its rich history and its electric future. “The Polo GTI is not just a car, it is a promise that electric doesn't mean the end of the fun,” says Schäfer. And judging by first impressions, the ID. Polo GTI will be proof that quiet electric motors can still get your pulse racing.
Conclusion: Electricity that inspires
The Volkswagen ID. Polo and Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI are more than just new models – they are symbols of a renaissance.
