Italian design is often timeless, and that's the case with the Fiat 500X, a car that goes beyond basic features to rank among cult products like the Vespa, Porsche 911 and Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. Despite a decade on the market, the Fiat 500X still looks as good as it did on day one – or better.

The Fiat 500X is one of those cars that car enthusiasts call "a car with a special charisma". When it was introduced by Fiat almost a decade ago, it immediately stepped alongside the Mini Countryman and reigned supreme among those who appreciate the Italian approach to the art of car making. This approach includes not only functionality, but also unmistakable Italian charm. The test Fiat 500X was just that: unmistakably Fiat, unmistakably Italian. In times when everything is devoid of color and taste, this is exactly what many are looking for in cars.

Fiat 500X was originally introduced in 2014 as part of the wider Fiat 500 line. It was designed as a compact crossover that combines the iconic style of the Fiat 500 with the greater spaciousness and functionality of an SUV. Over the years, the Fiat 500X has received many updates, including the latest model, which is equipped with a hybrid drive. 2018 was dedicated to him at Fiat slight facelift (lights, inoftainment), giving it a facelifted interior that includes redesigned seats and a matte silver dashboard. The biggest change is the introduction of the Uconnect infotainment system on all models, which allows for a more integrated user experience. The system includes a 7-inch display that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Otherwise, the car is very spacious. In the rear of the vehicle, adults will be somewhat limited due to headroom, but the space is sufficient for short and medium-distance journeys. The trunk with a volume of 350 liters exceeds many competitors and is extremely functional precisely because of its depth. On the way, we really didn't have any problems with stacking luggage for three people. Basically, we praised it as extremely spacious.

Despite the years, the dashboard is still functionally good, in addition to the classic counters, there is "a lot" of digital workspace.

Hybrid technology

Test Fiat 500X was labeled 1.5 Hybrid, which means it is equipped with a 1.5-liter hybrid engine that produces 131 horsepower (96 kW) and 240 Nm of torque. The hybrid system includes a 48-volt electric motor that improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. The engine is mated to an automatic 6-speed DDCT (Dual Dry Clutch Transmission) transmission that ensures smooth and quick shifting. The battery capacity of this hybrid system is 0.8 kWh. This small but efficient lithium-ion battery helps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions and improves overall vehicle performance by providing additional power to the electric motor during acceleration and when restarting the engine in Stop&Start mode. Feelings while driving were somewhat mixed, as the autonomy of the electric motor is extremely small, but at the same time you can feel the start of the otherwise excellent gasoline engine. Nevertheless, we must praise that the car is quite responsive and almost racing at times. Fiat 500X 1.5 Hybrid it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0-60 mp/h) in about 9 seconds, which is impressive for an urban crossover. The top speed is limited to 190 km/h (118 mph), which allows comfortable driving both on city streets and on highways.

Thanks to advanced hybrid technology, fuel consumption is improved, providing an average consumption of approximately 5.5 liters per 100 kilometers (51.4 mpg). CO2 emissions are reduced to approximately 125 g/km, which meets the latest environmental standards. The test itself showed consumption at 1,500 kilometers driven in one week 6.4 liters, which is an extremely good result considering the many highway kilometers.

A lot of equipment for a reasonable amount

Since the Fiat 500X is slowly saying goodbye, replaced it will be a Fiat 600 model, at Fiat they are generous with the equipment and of course also with the prices, which are really favorable at the moment, considering that the basic equipment package already includes LED daytime running lights, the Uconnect infotainment system with six speakers, AUX-in/USB connections and remote controls on the steering wheel . All Fiat 500X models also have a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, seven airbags, ABS with electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability control and a Hill Holder clutch for easier starting on slopes. Of course, radar cruise control and all other modern equipment are also possible for an additional fee or with a certain equipment package.

It is nicely equipped, for example Fiat 500X with Sport package, which adds some "pepper" to it, such as a special sports steering wheel with alcantara accessories, as well as sports pedals and various accessories on the body. So you will be for 120 horsepower with the Sport label and practically all the equipment cost only 21,990 euros.

About 27,000 euros for one that is assisted by electricity.

Fiat 500X it also offers the option of a sunroof (the test one had it), similar to the one offered by the Renault Twingo. Up to a speed of 80 km/h, use of the roof is tolerable, but it becomes quite loud at higher speeds. The sound insulation of the car is worse, which is especially noticeable in tunnels and while driving on the highway. Due to these shortcomings, I would personally advise against such a roof in principle and would not recommend it to be on the list of additional equipment. It is, of course, extremely romantic when you drive along the Amalfi Coast with the setting sun and perceive the surroundings in a different way. But these situations are really few. Therefore, the one with a "normal" roof is more useful in everyday traffic.

Conclusion: An Italian timeless classic with a touch of romance

Fiat 500X will be chosen by all those who love the Italian approach to mobility. It was never "perfect", but primarily functional for urban mobility. And that's exactly what the Fiat 500X is. Despite the years it has under its belt, it is still a car that many people still look at to see who is behind the wheel. And that counts.
