In February 2025, Slovenia became the venue for the exclusive European premiere of the all-electric Lynk & Co 02. The event in Bled and Bohinj was almost as spectacular as a scene from Bond – except instead of an Aston Martin, they presented a Chinese electric surprise. But before we start debating whether this is a real automotive revolution or just another Chinese trick, let's take a look at what this newcomer has to offer.
If you think you've seen this shape somewhere before – you're right. Lynk & Co 02 shares a technical basis with Volvo EX30 and Smartom #1, since all three come from of the Chinese giant Geely. This means that it is not a completely new player, but more of a remix version existing models.
Under the hood (although with electric cars this phrase is losing its meaning) lies:
- Battery: 66 kWh
- Power: 272 hp (200 kW) – same as Volvo EX30
- Drive: last (because a little drifting never hurts)
- Acceleration: around 5.7 seconds to 100 km/h
- Reach: 445 km according to WLTP (in reality, you should expect 350 km)
- Fast charging: 150 kW (10-80 % in 30 minutes)
The numbers are impressive, but they are somewhat familiar to us. In other words, if you know EX30 or Smart #1, then you know what to expect.
Design: Futuristic, with a bit of Chinese boldness
The Lynk & Co 02 follows the design philosophy of “less is more.” A minimalist front grille, sharp LED headlights and an aerodynamic silhouette give it a certain Scandinavian chic, even though it's made in China. But then Lynk & Co adds its own playful elements – like the inscription “We’ve got the power!” in the filler flap or adaptive vehicle sounds such as “Hey Honk”.
The interior is dominated by a huge 12.8-inch infotainment screen, minimalist dashboard and clever storage solutions. The materials are recycled (which is commendable), but they don't feel as premium as the Volvo. A little plastic here, a little cheap leather there – but hey, something had to be saved to keep the price affordable.
Roominess: More than EX30, less than XC40
Surprise! The Lynk & Co 02 is larger than the Volvo EX30 – at least by feel. The back seat is more spacious, the roof doesn't drop as aggressively, and the trunk offers 410 liters of space, which is about 100 liters more than the EX30. In addition, it has 15-liter frunk (front trunk), where you can store the charging cable and some other small items.
Driving characteristics: Not a rocket, but comfortable and convincing
On the road Lynk & Co 02 drives mature and polishedDespite having the same powertrain as the EX30, the chassis a little more geared towards comfortThis means it won't shake your kidneys on every hole, but it also won't be as sporty as some people would like.
The steering is a bit remote, similar to most electric cars, but with 272 hp and rear-wheel drive It can still play nicely in wet corners. It's not exactly a drift machine, but at least it has a little soul.
Price: Real value for money?
And now what everyone is interested in: How much will this cost?
Lynk & Co 02 is expected to launch at around 36,000 euros, which is quite competitive. This is significantly cheaper than the Volvo EX30, which with the same powertrain costs over 40,000 eurosFor this price you get:
- 66 kWh battery
- 272 hp
- 150 kW fast charging
- 22 kW three-phase AC charger (standard)
- Harman Kardon sound system
- 20-inch rims
The price listed above will be 40,990, which is not a small amount for a car that does not have an established brand, but at the same time not much considering the listed equipment. We are especially happy about this 22 kW AC charging, which comes in handy when charging the car on normal public infrastructure and halves the charging time. Quite a lot of equipment for this price! And this is also the main trump card Lynka & Co 02 – offers same technology as Volvo, but for less moneyOf course, it immediately costs as much or more than the excellent Tesla Model 3.
Final verdict: Brilliant buy or compromise?
The Lynk & Co 02 is an interesting alternative to the Volvo EX30 and the Smart #1. If you like the EX30 but find it too expensive, the 02 is a great choice. But if you were expecting something revolutionary, then... well, you might be a little disappointed.
This is a car that offers lots of space, good technical specifications and an affordable price, but it lacks a little character. If the EX30 is like Apple, the Lynk & Co 02 is more than Xiaomi – technically advanced, but less prestigious.
For those who want maximum value for their money and they don't mind driving a "Chinese Volvo", this will be a very good purchase.
For the rest? Volvo or Tesla will probably be a better choice.
