The goal of Montessori pedagogy is to raise a happy and contented child who will also contribute to a happy coexistence in the community and thereby create a happier world. Montessori education advocates that we observe the child at play and thereby encourage him to say what he needs.
The initiator of the Montessori method of teaching children from birth to adolescence is an Italian doctor, teacher and philosopher Maria Montessori. When working with children with special needs in institutions, she developed so-called sensory aids, with which the children learned through all their senses. She developed teaching with mathematical and geometric shapes, unusual smells and feeling rough and soft surfaces. This is how she developed her own educational concept.
What is Montessori material?
Montessori material it gives the child a basis for order and through it children learn about the relationships and laws that are present in life. All material is made of natural substances and is divided into five basic areas:
- Material for practical life must be adapted to the size of children. The exercises are divided into three areas: taking care of yourself (cleaning shoes, dressing, washing hands...), caring for the environment (working in the garden, washing clothes, washing dishes, dusting, cleaning windows...) and exercises related to community life (greeting guests, pouring drinks...). Children learn creativity, concentration, coordination and independence.
- Material for feeling includes many game options. The child learns about certain properties of an object: color, shape, size, weight and surface area. This experience, which comes through the senses, leads children to materialized abstraction. The child achieves internal order through clear and orderly concepts. The ability to research and learn about legality is developed. The child discovers and performs experiments on his own.
- Material for mathematics. Through practical exercises for life, children are already ready to work with mathematics material. The Golden Ball material is very well known. With their help, children get to know the decimal composition.
- Language material is coordinated with the feel material. The most familiar are the letters made of coarse, rough paper, pasted on wooden tiles. A child with sensitive fingertips types and kinesthetically experiences the shape of letters. Thus, some children know how to write letters, even if they do not know them yet.
- Material for spatial education. With it, children should establish contact with the world. The child discovers the relationship within geography, geology, chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, etc. The child must be enabled to understand basic knowledge about space. An example is a globe where children can feel the oceans and the earth.
