Norway: global electric mobility laboratory
Norway remains a global pioneer in the transition to electric transport. In March 2025, 91.3 % of all new registrations were battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), while internal combustion vehicles have practically disappeared from sales statistics. This high level of electrification is supported by a comprehensive set of incentives that make electric vehicles more affordable and attractive for everyday use. These include exemptions from value-added tax and import duties, free use of toll roads and ferries, permitted access to bus lanes, and an exceptionally developed charging infrastructure that enables fast and reliable charging throughout the country. As a result of these measures, electric cars have become the norm in Norway, not the exception – and the country remains a living model of the future that other countries around the world are trying to follow.
Best-selling model Tesla Y in Norway: Model Y Long Range AWD
According to data from Official Norwegian Vehicle Registration Database (OFV) and analysis of sales configurations, Norwegians most often choose the Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD versionThis version offers an ideal balance between price, performance and range, which is especially important in northern climates.
Why Long Range AWD?
- Range up to 533 km (WLTP) – which means less worry over long distances and in winter
- All-wheel drive (AWD) – for better grip on snowy and wet roads, which is crucial for Norwegian conditions
- Relatively affordable price (compared to the Performance version), but still more than enough performance for most users
What about the other versions?
- Model Y RWD (rear-wheel drive) It is the most affordable (~€45,000), but due to its shorter range and poorer grip in winter conditions, it is not the first choice of most Norwegians.
- Model Y Performance It offers sportier driving characteristics and faster acceleration (0–100 km/h in 3.7 seconds), but it is more expensive (over €60,000) and has a slightly shorter range – which is why it remains in the minority, especially among enthusiasts.
But the competition is always closer
Brands such as Volkswagen, Volvo, Hyundai and BMW, are not sitting idly by. They are coming with improved models and lower prices. However, the real threat to Tesla in Norway comes from China:
- NIO ET5 Touring (replaceable batteries, range up to 560 km WLTP)
- XPeng G9 (advanced autopilot, cheaper than Model X)
Chinese brands are reducing costs, improving technology, and targeting European markets, where consumers are price-sensitive but technologically educated.
Tesla Model Y is also in 2025 automotive symbol of Norway's transition to electric mobilityWith record numbers and market share, Tesla proves that it still understands this market better than its competitors. But with the arrival of new players and technological advances, Elon Musk's company will have to do more than just maintain the status quo.
Will the Chinese fail the American giant? Will the European industry finally respond with equal efficiency? If Norway is any indicator of the future, then the battle for dominance in the EV world is only just beginning.
