The first avalanche information boards in the Julian Alps have grown, boards that save lives

Avalanche information board

In Slovenia, the first avalanche information boards have been erected in the Julian Alps. The number of visitors to the mountains in winter has grown dramatically in recent years. Many of them are quite brave and not just extreme athletes. Alpinists, hikers, snowshoers, touring skiers, freeriders go to the hills in winter, and families with small children are among them. But mountains are dangerous. Especially at a time when the hills are whitewashed and the danger of avalanches lurks on them. Too often we ignore this danger, saying that it can't happen to us anymore. Therefore, we do not know what to do if we are actually surprised by an avalanche. These boards can save your life!

The danger of triggering avalanches it is large in winters rich in snow. But especially in recent years does not stop many visitors to the mountains, so that even in the winter months they would not venture into the hills en masse. As much as nature is dangerous in winter, it is also attractive and with bleached tops like a siren invites you to embrace. Visitors are often naive and not ready to traps that nature hides. Avalanches represent a serious threat, but we are all too aware of it. That is why they are members of the Ljubljana Sports Association Freeapproved in cooperation with a sports store ActionMama at the most visited starting points for winter trips in the Triglav National Park installed avalanche information boards.

They were the first to grow on Pokljuka (on Rudne polje), soon followed by three more such boards, namely in the Tamar and Krma valleys and on the Vogel ski resort. With them, they want to raise the level of awareness of winter visitors to the mountains and enable them recognition of avalanche danger.

Anže Čokl, alpinist, alpinist instructor, videographer, photographer, speaker, engineer, diver, pilot, eternal adventurer and alpha and omega of the project, said about the campaign: "We want to set up avalanche information tables increase the safety of visitors, reduce the number of accidents and thus also the intervention of members of the mountain rescue service, who in avalanche conditions put their lives at risk even more than usual."

And what is written on the avalanche information boards? On them, we can read the circumstances under which an avalanche is triggered and how can we recognize avalanche danger ourselves. Knowledge of the conditions for the formation of avalanches and observation of the surroundings during movement in the mountains significantly reduce the risk to hikers, mountaineers and ski touring skiers. This kind of knowledge is easy the dividing line between life and death. A verification device is also installed on the board activity of the avalanche woodpecker.

Avalanches are extremely treacherous, so you need to be properly prepared for them.

Freeapproved will work to install avalanche information boards in the future also at other popular Slovenian mountain winter starting points.

Avalanche is the most insidious winter hazard in the mountains. We can be at risk while walking, sledding, skiing or driving a car, on Zasava meadows or on the steepest mountain walls, day and night, in the sun and in the fog. The best protection against an avalanche is knowing the snow conditions that can trigger an avalanche and recognizing the danger signs on your trip. With the avalanche information boards, we want to offer a bit of knowledge to less experienced mountain visitors as well," explains the geologist Jaka Ortnar.
