Mercedes-Benz has created the first electric papamobile based on the G-Class model. With this vehicle, Pope Francis is entering a new chapter in sustainable mobility, when he will travel completely emission-free in Rome during the jubilee year of 2025.
The new electric Popemobile is based on the Mercedes-Benz G580 EQ model, which has been adapted to the specific requirements of the Vatican. In addition to the fully electric drive, it boasts the following features:
- Energy efficiency: consumption of 30.4-27.7 kWh/100 km, which provides the vehicle with maximum efficiency.
- Fully customized interior: the pope's seat can be raised and rotated, which allows for better contact with the audience. Seats for two companions have also been added.
- Innovative design: the vehicle has a removable roof for open driving, and in bad weather protection is provided by a specially designed hard cover.
- Symbolic color: the iconic pearly white exterior, symbolizing purity and holiness.
This unique design is the result of more than years of work by teams from Austria, Germany and Italy, where experts combined knowledge from research, design and production.

Mercedes-Benz has been supplying the Vatican with special vehicles since 1930. The first popemobile was the Nürburg 460 Pullman Saloon, followed by prestigious models such as the 600 Pullman Landaulet and the G-Class. For the past 45 years, the G-Class has become synonymous with papamobiles, and now with its electric version, it opens a new chapter in history.
