The South Korean city of Busan is expected to grow a city on water in four years, which will be the first of its kind in the world. The project was planned by the architect Bjarke Ingels in cooperation with Oceanix, and the plan itself is also confirmed by the United Nations.
The city is said to cover an area of 75 hectares and will accommodate 10,000 inhabitants. It will consist of hexagonal platforms - islands, with each neighborhood on two hectares, which will be home to 300 people.
All buildings on islands and neighborhoods will have the maximum six floors, so that they will defy the wind more easily. The city is supposed to rise with the sea and will therefore be resistant to floods, hurricanes and tsunamis.
All city communities, regardless of size, will prioritize building materials of local origin, including bamboo, which has a higher tensile strength than steel. The city will be designed to organically grow, transform and develop.
Another key part of this self-sustaining autonomy is development ocean farming – using cages under the platforms could collect scallops, seaweed and other seafood. The city should also produce own energy, fresh water and other food. The cost of the floating city is estimated at $200 million and is expected to be completed by 2025.
