The Slovenian Youth Theatre always treads the edge of expectations with the selection of performances on its stage, as it rarely stages works intended only for the stage. The first premiere of the new season, co-produced by Škuca and SMG, is a fairy tale full of symbolism, iconography and ideas that, of course, also speak about us. Oscar Wilde's story about a fisherman who falls in love with a mermaid was staged by director Ivan Peternelj. Following the magical story, the fisherman is united with the mermaid only if he gets rid of his soul, because sea creatures do not have souls. He cuts his soul from his body and rushes into the depths of the sea kingdom, while his soul, lonely and heartless, sets out into the world. A year later, he returns to shore, calls the fisherman from the depths and tells him the wonderful and terrible adventures he has experienced around the world. She promises him the wisdom she has learned, the wealth she has discovered, but the fisherman is not tempted by all this, because he loves the mermaid infinitely. In the third year, she confides a wonderful secret to the fisherman, and the fisherman can no longer resist her, so he sets off on his journey with his soul, leaving the mermaid behind.
