A tense psychological game with no way out: "Brick" is Netflix's summer bomb from Germany that will keep you glued to the couch

When your home becomes your prison

What would you do if you woke up one morning to find that your building had been surrounded by an impenetrable red brick wall overnight? No internet. No way out. No answers. “Brick,” the new German thriller on Netflix, is a mix of paranoia, mystery, and urban claustrophobia that won’t let you breathe—or sleep.

Director Philip Koch, known for his dystopian series Tribes of Europe, is with the movie »Brick" created a tense thriller that takes place almost exclusively within four walls. At the center of the story are Tim (Matthias Schweighöfer) and Olivia (Ruby O. Fee), who wake up in their apartment to find that all the exits have been blocked by brick walls – overnight, without explanation, without warning.

Their surprise quickly turns to panic when they discover they are not the only prisoners. The entire building is surrounded by a mysterious wall, with no signal, no electricity, no way to contact the outside world. What follows is a tense psychological game of survival that slowly reveals the dark secrets of the residents - and perhaps the even darker reasons why they are the ones chosen for this brutal game with no way out.

The German answer to “The Platform” and “10 Cloverfield Lane”

Visually clean and stylistically precise, the film draws on the best elements of single-location thrillers. As the camera lingers on close faces and empty hallways, the tension builds in silence—until it explodes in violence, despair, or surprising revelations.

Compared to films like The Platform or 10 Cloverfield Lane, “Brick” adds its European touch: less Hollywood action, more psyche, more social allegory. It’s not just about a brick wall – it’s about the walls we build around ourselves, mutual distrust, isolation, and hidden truths.

A cast that surprises

Matthias Schweighöfer, known primarily for his roles in lighter action films (Army of Thieves), here he shows a darker, more vulnerable side. Ruby O. Fee perfectly matches him with her magnetic presence, while the supporting cast – Frederick Lau, Alexander Beyer, Salber Lee Williams – helps create a sense of authentic human drama at the heart of the unusual situation.

Why watch the movie "Brick"?

  • Because this is a tense, intelligent, and visually attractive thriller that doesn't underestimate the viewer.
  • Because under the guise of a genre film, there is a shocking reflection of modern loneliness.
  • Because it will force you to ask yourself: what would you do?
